[edit] Plot summary
"Sometimes dreams were gateways through which messages might come. Beasts called them ashlings: dreams that called..."
In order to seal an alliance between the Misfit community at Obernewtyn and rebel forces, the powerful young farseeker, Elspeth Gordie, disguises herself as a gypsy and travels to dangerous Sutrium, seat of the oppressive ruling Councilcourt.
She journeys anxiously, fearing the long-awaited dream summons from the OldOnes to fulfil her secret destiny will interrupt her task for the Master of Obernewtyn. But through encounters with slavers, Herder priests, rebels and enigmatic nomads from the distant lands of Sador, Elspeth learns that even now she does the bidding of the OldOnes.
She is reassured, until she discovers that she is being stalked through her dreams. Her only protection is the ravaged, half mad, telepathic cat, Maruman...
