Ashim Ahluwalia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ashim Ahluwalia (Born 1972 in Bombay, India) is an independent film director, screenwriter and producer. His first feature-length project, JOHN & JANE (US TITLE: JOHN & JANE TOLL-FREE), premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2005. The film was subsequently acquired by HBO Films for US release.[1] JOHN & JANE showed at the Berlin International Film Festival and New Directors/ New Films in New York in 2006. The film won the International award at the European Media Art Festival,[2] A Maysles Brothers Award[3] as well as the Director’s Guild of America Special Jury Award/ VC Filmfest[4]. JOHN & JANE has also won an Indian National Film Award.[5]

Ahluwalia works outside the traditional confines of the "Bollywood" system [6] and his short films have showed at venues such as the Tate Modern in London[7] and Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was commissioned to work on a group film/ architecture installation for the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale.[8]

His films display a preference for experimental structures (JOHN & JANE is a catalogue of six seemingly unrelated characters), often blurring the lines between documentary and fiction.
