[edit] Overview

Asheboro High School is the only high school in the Asheboro City Schools District. The current campus was constructed between 1949 and 1959, with a major addition to the gymnasium made in 1980 and further renovations made in the early 1990s. The recent annexation of the Sir Robert Motel has expanded space for classes and a "Professional Development Center" (nicknamed the Comet Corner). The student body consists of approximately 1,300 students.

[edit] Athletics

Asheboro High School's mascot is the Blue Comet. They play in the NCHSAA's 3-A division.

[edit] Football

The Blue Comets have been Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference champions four times in 1981, 1985, 1989, and most recently in 2006. In a stunning upset, Asheboro beat soon to be 3-A State Champions Eastern Randolph 12-10 on October 13, 2006, leaving ER with their only loss for the year. It was the first win for Asheboro over Eastern Randolph since 1991. The high school football team recently received the title, Undefeated Champs in 2005-2006 school year, and their coach, Sam Whitley, received national recognition from the National Football Committee. The Blue Comets were ranked number two in North Carolina at the end of the 2006 season. The Asheboro High School JV team in 2007 became the first team to be undefeated in a season since junior varsity football was instilled at AHS. They posted a record of overall 10-0 record and at 6-0 record in conference play.

[edit] Men's Soccer

The 2007 Asheboro Varsity Men's Soccer team completed the best season in record at Asheboro high school. With a final record of 15-3-3, the Comets came away with the title as Champions of the Mid Piedmont Conference and a number 1 seed in the postseason 3-A State Playoffs for the first time in history. The team also broke into the state rankings for the first time in history, ending the regular season at #8 in the state.
