Aryeh Mekel

Ambassador Arye Mekel is an Israeli politician who most recently served as the Consul General of Israel in New York (until August 2007).
The child of Holocaust survivors and a former radio correspondent, Ambassador Mekel served as Foreign Policy Advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and as Director General of the Israel Broadcasting Authority. Among other prominent positions, Amb. Mekel served as Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States, Director of the Government's Media Center during the peak of the latest wave of terrorism in Israel (2000-2002), and Deputy Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations. In December 2007, Mekel was appointed Spokesman of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, replacing Mark Regev.
Mekel holds a degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism.
