[edit] Indian collaboration

Hi Arunram! I see you (just like me) are interested in an Indian Collaboration of the week. I have already started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Indian wikipedians' notice board. Feel free to air your views. There are many active Indians now, and we can start an Indian collaboration in a month or so, if they are interested. utcursch 07:34, Dec 30, 2004 (UTC)

Hi! I thought I'd ask you some things about INCOTW:

  • The section under Pruning says that a nomination needs 3 votes in 7 days, 6 votes in 14 days etc. The template at the bottom to nominate new articles however says it needs 5 votes in 7 days etc. Which is the correct figure?
  • When is the update cycle carried out? You added the INCOTW notice to Himalaya on Feb 08 2005, but the INCOTW page mentions that all vote tallies and nomination updates are done on Sundays. Should we treat Himalaya as a special case and give it an extra few days, or should we change Sundays to Tuesdays?
  • If a nomination fails to get its required votes, should it be immediately removed or should it wait until the next voting cycle (ie, the Sunday or Tuesday)? What is the recommended practice in updating INCOTW? Can anyone make edits to the page (like moving articles to /Removed etc)?

Thanks. -- Brhaspati 23:25, 2005 Feb 13 (UTC)

Ouch! I notice you added the Wikistress image recently. I hope I didn't have anything to do with it! Anyway, I thought a bit about the points I raised, and I'd like your opinion on the following:
  • A nomination needs 5 votes in the first week, and 3 additional votes every additional week to stay in the list.
  • Nominations that fail the criteria for two consecutive weeks may be removed.
  • All numbers and dates in the "needs X votes by date Y" message should be updated (if necessary) by anyone who votes for that nomination. (You don't have to vote in order to update the figures, but if you vote, you must check the dates and update if needed).
Thanks, and stay cool! -- Brhaspati 00:31, 2005 Feb 16 (UTC)

[edit] Getting Started

As you requested. :)

I saw your userpage. Indian Culture actually exists, but currently is known as Culture of India. Should I move it? The answer is that we don't have to. - We know that many people type many similiar terms that eventually come to one single article, and we mark the similiar terms to redirect themselves to the single article. For example, USA redirects itself to United States.

Creating your first redirect :

1. Click on Indian Culture.

2. Type #REDIRECT, add a space followed by [[Single article you want to redirect to]], which in this case is Culture of India.

3. Click 'Save Page'.

4. If done correctly, Indian Culture will redirect automatically.

Good luck for you Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week India, that's a good initiative! In fact, Wikipedia is what it is today because of Wikipedian's initiatives! For now, you may want to work around with articles relating to your interest first. Once you are familiar enough, you can start helping out with the Wikipedia 'frontline' such as cleanup, RC Patrol (for vandalism) and looking out for CopyVios.

[edit] 2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_in_India

Hi, just wanted to trim so we can add some content instead of just linking to the official site. i must have cut some additional info as well which i have restored. Anyways, I have put up a single link in a new section. cheerio. pamri 07:30, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sure, will add major edits in the talk before doing it. The content you reverted, IMHO is more suited in the List of earthquakes article not that it's not useful. You can add a link to the article in see also. The content is coming alone just fine thanks to you, but we just need to ensure that one is not inundated with all information in just one page. pamri 16:22, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Project India

I'm sorry but it wont be possible this week as I have prior commitments. Go ahead with the project if you have to. Although I will be online, I will be free on Jan 31, and may take part if it is still running then. Till then best of luck with the project. PS. I saw that you watch Bangalore. I have just completed the Gangtok page, I think it would be great if you could update the infobox like I have done to Gangtok. Nichalp 10:05, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Articles

Hi, I don't think we will have any collaboration of the week after seeing the poor enthusiasm required for the 15 votes. Why dont to elevate a single article as a collaboration so that we can all work on the article right away? In this way we can really start the wheels moving. Nichalp 18:37, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. It is done. My apologies for the delayed resonse to your suggestion. Please participate actively in the INCOTW. The current collboration is Himalaya Cheers Arunram 06:13, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiportal/India

Hi, I agree that we need to add india notice board and current events to the portal page, esp. the notice board so that more people know about it. I will try to do that soon. I will also try to update the content on the portal, though we need to get a rough idea of how often should we go about doing it. cheers kaal 05:56, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I do hope someday this would get updated on a daily basis. We have enough potential articles in all these topics to keep this going for more than year. The catch is that this page would need to point to articles that have good content and substance. In light of that, we first need to identify articles that would show up here and try and clean up / beef up the content of these potential articles. I am currently making a list of these articles in the talk page (todo). Please feel free to participate and add to this list.

Cheers Arunram 06:01, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I forgot to add. I currently think that the updates should be weekly till we mature the layout and create a pipeline of a dozen future issues. We also need to sign up some editors for each of these areas. Are you interested in any? Cheers Arunram 06:06, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] In the news

Hi! I've added the Indian current events link to the In the news section on the main page of wikipedia. Nichalp 20:32, Feb 19, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Nichalp, that was a good thought. I could nt add that myself since one needs sysop rights to do that. I am thinking that we must add photos to events to make them more interesting/appealing. ANyy other thoughts or ideas regarding India current events. Arunram 01:55, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I was shell shocked to see so much content about the Filmfare awards. It is you. You have been creating content in this area meticulously. I came across this content while adding the awards to Indian current events. Congrats on your work! Arunram 07:34, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Reverted edits

Perhaps that kind of thing is more suited to Wikinews. Current events pages are not meant to be competing with other news sources. They are supposed to be a log of events. I maintain that Indian event of the day looks ugly on Indian current events page mainly because the event is arbitrarily chosen and picture seems to be forced onto the event. Pictures can be used on Current events pages but they should be small as Current events pages tend to be large just by text. They should also be included only if relevant to some event and located close to that event with an appropriate caption. Forced pictures seem ugly in my opinion. Also, I hope we can focus first on including more and more events and providing appropriate context to them rather than introducing templates which are hard to maintain. I am sorry if my reverts offended you. --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 20:52, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

My responses to your observations. A) Wikinews reference: I am aware of Wikinews. I do not believe that India Event of the day conflicts with Wikinews. If it does, current events pages also do. The event of the day just gives a brief context to the key event. Does not go into elaborations, as does a news article. The event of the day highlights an event and does not talk about developing stories. IEOTD is still a log of events, but a smaller set, one per day. B) Arbitrariness of choice: I think the choices have been typically the headlines from most newspapers, provided they havent been developing stories or opinions. Cant see the arbitrariness. If you still think so, please suggest a way to remove the arbitrariness than IEOTD itself. C) Force fitting images: Give me an example of this. Trying to fit images to events also exposes the limited set of images in wikipedia for Indian content. This is food for thought and an opportunity for us to seek more images. Most personalities, locations do not have images. We need to better this. Infact editing current events exposes the limited Indian content in wikipedia. My edits surround the current events pages and the pages that dont exist. But do explain the force fitting part. D) Pictures should be small: How small is small is debatable. I am open to suggestions. What do you thing is reasonable? Pictures better traffic, than mere text. Pictures give a great deal of context for non Indian readers. Larger pictures dont matter technically (but may matter aesthetically) since the image anyway has to load irrespective of the display size. The images have all carried captions. Please see usage. E) Focus on content: I agree we need more events for some. You would have already seen my thrust on that. I thought I was adding too much for some of the days! F) Hard to maintain templates: Disagree here. I used a wonderful set of ideas from Featured pictured of the day. The templates for IEOTD are modelled on those. I find these very flexible and easy to use. Please see the archive page and you will concur. I can take you through these. Can we sync on IM? Closing thoughts: I continue to need your views (i value them greatly) and thoughts on my responses. I need your support and help on IEOTD. I surely seem to find way of bettering it to make it appeal to you and other wikipedia who may share your opinion. Best regards Arunram

[edit] Narendra Modi

I removed the quotes from the external affairs ministry as one they read like a news item and this is an encylopedic article and two they represent views of the government. Also the visa controversy occupies more space in the article than the rest of the stuff and looks like this is the only important thing to happen in his life, its just a small event which will be forgotten in a few days. Whether the US was right or wrong in rejecting the visa should be disscussed on a page regarding the law and not on this page. And the statement by Modi is just his POV and i will remove that. let me know ur views on this. I dont want a edit war happening over this. talk kaal 04:16, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I agree with you Kaal that there is very little else in the page. I agree we need to beef the page up otherwise. Given the sensitivity of the case and the nature of firm response from the Government of India and the bipartisan nature of the response, it is very important that these views are brought out if it is pertinent to mention that US denied the visa. If you would like to drop the US dropping the VISA all together, I am fine. Otherwise the offical views, Modis view and PMs view need to stay. Given the Indian government position one could also call the US position a POV, is nt it? Well all I care is to have Wikipedia present a balanced view, not a lop sided one. Let us not forget that the courts of law havent indicted Modi yet. Manmohan's view that the US should not make subjective judgement over an Indian constitutional authority is significant, considering that Modi is from the opposition. This is not a small issue, but a political storm that is brewing. The US move is also unprecedented and a significant one. I am in agreement on the need to beef up the article. Request your support in reaching a consensus. Regards Arunram 04:28, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
My problem with this whole issue is that this is being blown out of proportion as it is simply an issue of interpretation of a law that the US has by the US. It is for the US to take care of it. Anyway i have rewritten the said section to try and make it not read like an news article, but i dont think it is anywhere near good yet. I would rather see this section removed for now and added back later as a sentence or two once the issue is settled one way or the other. Right now it would lead to too much addition of all kinds of things being reported in the media which may or may not be true. If this needs an article it can be started as a seperate article as a current news article. Infact looking at the narendra modi article it looks like the visa controversy can be spun off as its own article. I am ok with that. If you r fine go ahead and remove the section from the article. Also please leave a message on my talk page as i might not be watching ur talk page. talk kaal 23:45, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] refining new goals

who defines the Top level priority? looking at the history, it seems that you play a part. india's featured articles seem a little dry at the moment. there is a distinct lack of articles related to contemporary indian culture. what is there to show that india's culture is alive & kicking as opposed to stale & dead? even the page on mumbai shows little evidence of living culture. why isn't bollywood a Top level priority? i'd like the world to know more about modern india. for balance perhaps top priority show go to articles about; 'the changing attitudes to sex in india'. other Regional notice boards are more balanced. the irish are working on Father_Ted. the japanese on Education_in_Japan. U.S._Southern on Hurricane_Camille etc. what we need are more FAs that that would make an interesting Today's featured article. surely Top level priority should goto more articles with worldwide popular appeal to balance all the dry articles?
