Aruval

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aruval, with its various forms, is an Indian sword variety, particularly seen in South India.

It is unique in the fact that the blade starts from the grip to the main cutting part, more like an extended sickle. In effect it is a reverse curved sword and does not fall specifically under the categories of a sword or an axe. It is useful in slicing coconuts when it is shorter in length and sometimes in harming people when it is longer.

Sometimes, these Aruvals that are used in combat may reach a length of 3 to 4 feet. Those Aruvals that are worshipped as the weapons of the Tamil Kaval Deivams can be of great lengths as 5 to 6 feet.
