[edit] Keep

In response to post on Keeper's talk page:

There's no reason to delete this article. From the New York Times, a generally acceptable significant, third party source: "Sassano, the rookie from UC-Berkeley, appears to have a roster spot sewn up." And, March 1, 2008: "A couple of the Red Bulls’ draft picks — most notably midfielder Luke Sassano (UC-Berkeley), defender Eric Brunner (Ohio State) and midfielder Danleigh Borman (Rhode Island) — played well Saturday and could remain in the club’s plans.". Red Bull New York is an American professional soccer organization based in New Jersey, who currently fields a team in Major League Soccer.

Per WP:ATHLETE: Competitors and coaches who have competed in a fully professional league, or a competition of equivalent standing in a non-league sport such as swimming, golf or tennis.

How does he fail WP:ATHLETE? Tanthalas39 (talk) 19:52, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

He fails WP:Athlete as he hasn't actually played in a fully professional league (i.e. the MLS) - he has only played pre-season friendlies, which are not League games. пﮟოьεԻ 57 19:59, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
I can't find where WP:ATHLETE stipulates that the game/match in question be a "League game". Tanthalas39 (talk) 20:10, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
You've quoted it above! "in a fully professional league". пﮟოьεԻ 57 20:14, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
The MLS is a fully professional league. He competed in a game against another team, set up, scheduled, sanctioned, and ran by the MLS - whether or not it was an official season game is irrelevant. While the game was classified as a "scrimmage", that doesn't apply here - WP:ATHLETE does not require that the game be "official".

Friday, Mar 7, 2008 The New York Red Bulls (or Red Bull New York, rather) defeated namesake Red Bull Salzburg, 3-2, in Austria on Thursday. All the goals came in the second half, with Salzburg taking a quick 2-0 lead after the restart. New York began its comeback in the 59th minute when Juan Pablo Angel put home the rebound from a Claudio Reyna shot. Reyna created the second as well, setting Luke Sassano up from close range in the 66th, and Mike Magee completed the comeback, firing home the rebound from a Sassano effort in the 78th. The win followed a 1-0 loss to the Red Bull Salzburg reserves on Monday.

It's clear you are attempting to rigidly define WP:ATHLETE to conform to your opinion that this article should be deleted. I think overall this player meets notability criteria. I'm pretty sure he didn't play in that above game for free - making him a professional athlete in a professional league. Tanthalas39 (talk) 20:26, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
No, my interpretation is based on the WP:FOOTY consensus. If you don't believe me, I suggest you go and ask the group for yourself. The facts are clear: he hasn't played in a fully professional league. пﮟოьεԻ 57 20:29, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, okay. I respect your opinion and I won't try to convince you. I believe otherwise, but I suppose that's why these discussions exist. Tanthalas39 (talk) 20:33, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

I've replied to Number 57 on his talkpage regarding the "keep" decision for further clarification. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 14:13, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
