• Delete, dicdef. Merge/redirect doesn't work for me because a thesis statement (a sentence that summarizes a paragraph/short essay) really has nothing to do with a thesis (a very lengthy work of academic significance). Dcarrano July 9, 2005 17:40 (UTC)
  • A "thesis statement" and academic theses have everything in the world to do with each other. The former represents the latter in miniature, and each may be defined as (roughly, for I am no lexicographer) "the position which is to be proven through analysis" usually thereafter following. Those of us who have had the experience of writing bad first thesis drafts have probably also shared the experience of having a thesis advisor drive this point home repeatedly.
