Nathaniel "Texas Jack" Reed (March 23, 1862-January 7, 1950) was a 19th century American outlaw. He acted both on his own and as leader of a bandit gang robbing banks, trains and stagecoaches in the American Southwest, particularly the Rocky Mountains and the Indian Territory, during the 1880s and 90s.

He is claimed to be the last surviving "47 most notorious outlaws" of Indian Territory, he became an evangelist in his later years and could often be seen on the streets of Tulsa preaching on the streets against the life of crime. His memoirs were published during the 1930s and are considered valuable collectors items today (one copy was reportedly sold on the internet for $1,000 in 2007). In these, he claimed to have ridden with the Dalton gang, Bill Doolin, Henry Starr and other known outlaws and bandits of the old west. He may have also helped Cherokee Bill, a fellow outlaw from the Indian Territory, escape from Fort Smith during the 1880s.

As with many outlaws of the era, Reed's colorful stories of his near 10-year career as an outlaw were most likely exaggerated by future writers. In one instance, he claimed to have briefly rode with the Dalton boys in their dual bank robberies in Coffeyville in 1892 as well as participating in the infamous gunfight at Ingalls in 1893. There are no documented reports that he was involved in either of these events.

Born in Madison County, Arkansas, his father was killed in action fighting for the Union Army during the American Civil War, probably at the Battle of Campbell's Station on November 16, 1863. Reed lived with a number of relatives until 1883 when, at the age of 21, he moved to the American frontier. He worked at various jobs in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas and finally Oklahoma where he was working as a ranch hand for the Terry outfit.

While working there during the summer of 1885, he was recruited by the foreman to rob a train at La Junta, Colorado. During the robbery, Reed entered the passenger car firing his pistol in order to keep the passengers under control. He later received $6,000 for his part of the hold up. With the success of his first train robbery, Reed abandoned working as a cowboy and became an outlaw. During the next nine years, he and his gang robbed countless trains, stagecoaches, banks and, on one occasion, captured a large shipment of bullion in California. ^[1]

Living near Muskogee, Oklahoma during the early 1890s, he learned that a gold shipment was leaving Dallas, Texas on November 13, 1894. Recruiting Buz Luckey, William "Will" Smith and Tom Root, he selected Blackstone Switch at Wybark at the site of the robbery where the gang practiced a staged robbery the day before the robbery. The plan was for Reed to throw the switch as the train approached then, as the train entered onto a sidetrack, the gang would use dynamite to enter the express car. Root, a full-blooded Cherokee known for his size and strength, was to enter the express car, break open the strong boxes, and bring out the gold. Smith would hold a gun on the engineer and fireman while Luckey was to stay with the horses.

The following day however, as the Katy No. 2 approached, Reed threw the switch too early and engineer Joseph Hotchkiss stopped the train as he saw the signal light change. With the train stopping far short of the siding, Reed and the others were forced to ran towards the train yelling and shooting. Hotchkiss and the fireman alerted the messengers of the robbery using the bell cord connected to the car and jumped off the train to hide in a small ravine near by.

The railroad company, suspecting a possible robbery, had moved the gold to another train and had in its place several armed messengers guarding the express car including Bud Ledbetter, Paden Tolbert, Sid Johnson, Frank Jones and several others. When Reed and the others approached the express car, he called for the messengers to leave the car. When the messengers refused, Reed and Tom Root took cover behind some trees and began shooting into the car. The messengers returned fire and a gunfight took place for nearly an hour. Eventually one of Reed's men was killed and Reed jumped onto the train going through the passenger cars forcing passengers to put their valuables in a sack before his gang fled.

Reed was shot by Bud Ledbetter while they rode off however, the pain from his wound growing so severe that he gave some of the stolen loot to his partners who were forced to leave him behind. He lay on a blanket hiding under a rock ledge when he was found by an Indian woman who nursed him back to health.

Meanwhile, the American Express Company had offered a reward of $250 for the arrest and conviction of each member of the gang. An extensive manhunt was conducted by U.S. Marshal George Crump and S. Morton Rutherford who sent large groups of deputies into the Indian Territory and Creek Nation. While burning the canebrakes in the Verdigris bottoms, one deptuty found the burnt remains of Reed's saddle and threatened to destroy the crops of local residents if they did not turn over Reed and his men. This was considered a legal act, authorized by Judge Isaac Parker himself, however no one came forward with information. Reed was warned of the search and decided to leave the territory as soon as he was able. He arrived in Seneca, Missouri on December 9, where Bill Lawrence took care of him.

Once he had fully recovered from his wounds, he was able to return to Arkansas and stayed with his brother in Madison County in February 1895. Deciding to retire from a life of crime, he wrote to Judge Isaac Parker and agreed to testify against the man who planned the robbery in exchange for probation although he did not participate in the proceedings. ^[1] Although Smith was able to disappear, U.S. Marshal Newton LaForce was able to successfully track down Luckey and Root who were both hiding out at Root's home in Broken Arrow, only 15 miles south of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two fugities were subsequently killed in a gunfight with LaForce and his men on December 4, 1894. ^[2]

Despite being promised immunity by Parker, Reed was convicted of train robbery and sentenced to serve five years imprisonment. He would eventually serve less than a year when, shortly before his own death, Parker granted Reed his parole in November 1896. He later carried around a letter signed by Ledbetter recognizing Reed as a man he shot as well as his signed parole from Judge Parker. ^[1]

After his release, Reed became an evangelist preaching on the rewards of living a respectable, law-abiding life. He toured the country with a series of Wild West shows and published his memoirs "The Life of Texas Jack" in 1936. He also had several pamphlets and dime novels published describing his life as an outlaw, which sold 35,000 copies, before his death at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 87. He was later buried in St. Paul, Arkansas. ^[3]

In 1506, Philip of Burgundy, on route to Spain, was forced by fierce storms to seek refuge in ann English port. As Henry's guest, Philip was persuaded to agree to a new trading agreement, the Malus Intercursus ('evil treaty'). According to the terms of the commercial treaty between Henry VII and Philip of Burgundy, it was agreed that: - Trade between England and the Low Countries would be free. -English merchants were to be allowed to anchor and remain at anchor in Philip's harbours and to transport their goods without any charge unless they were sold or unloaded. - Philip's subjects were to pay the customary English duties as defined by the treaty of 1496 (Magnus Intercursus) - Philip and his heirs were not to exclude English cloth from their dominions nor prohibit their use nore impose any duties upon their sale.

In fact, the treaty was never a realistic basis on which satisfactory commercial relations could be carried out. It was too biased towards the English. Philip died soon afterwards, so it was never put into practice. Ultimately, numerous other countries were angered by this greedy move of Henry's and were so more reluctant to trade with England and left sour relations.

Pearse Flynn is an Irish businessman best known as Chairman of Scottish First Division Football Club, Livingston FC. He enjoyed early career success as an employee of various large IT and telecoms companies, but is now an entrepreneur with interests in telemarketing and sub-prime lending.

He is a controversial figure within Scottish football and business circles, having rescued Livingston from administration in 2004 with the express intention of running it as a profitable business and having no previous affinity with the club. As Chairman, Flynn has been at the centre of the landmark court case of Emmanuelle Dorado, resulting in the SFA fining the club and banning Livingston from player transfers.^[4]

Flynn's business success has also been tempered by controversy surrounding a number of failed businesses that resulted in large and sudden lay-offs in both his native Ireland and adopted Scotland, with claims of unpaid salaries.^[5]

Born in Cork, Flynn obtained degrees in Applied Physics from Cork University and in Digital Systems from Limerick University. His early career saw him working for a number of years at Wang Labs in Scotland, where he was Production Manager. Flynn then spent 11 years at Compaq where he held a number of management positions, before being appointed General Manager EMEA of Newbridge Networks in 1999.^[6]

At Newbridge Flynn acquired a reputation for slashing costs and a direct approach to management. His career flourished and he was appointed CEO. In 2000 Newbridge Networks was acquired by French company, Alcatel.^[7]

In 2001 Flynn left Alcatel and was appointed CEO of Damovo, a spin off from Erickson, funded by private equity firm Apax. At this point Flynn’s magic touch seems to have deserted him and he parted company with Damovo in 2003, in a move that was described as “amicable and immediate”. ^[8] Shortly afterwards Damovo made large scale redundancies and was handed over to its creditors.^[9]

Flynn then embarked on a second career as an entrepreneur. He purchased Glasgow based call centre company Callpoint Europe, convinced that he could buck the trend of moving call centres offshore.^[10] However later that year following the loss of a court case into non-payment of rent, Flynn put Callpoint into liquidation, restarting his investment as Contact4U Ltd.^[11] Located in offices at Glasgow Airport, the new company quickly won contracts with companies such as Talk Talk and Scottish Power.

In 2004 Flynn led the Lionheart Consortium that took control of Livingston FC from Dominic Keane. The club was at that point playing in the Scottish Premier League and enjoying the most successful period of its history, but in need of new finance and in administration.

In late 2005 Flynn launched Smarter Loan Ltd, a sub-prime loan broker and the company took over from Intelligent Finance as sponsors of Livingston FC. ^[12]

In May 2006 Livingston were relegated from the SPL and Flynn courted controversy in his attempts to force significant salary reductions on players with existing contracts. Manu Dorado refused the demand that he take a 60% cut in salary, despite having a year remaining on his contract with the club. Flynn unilaterally forced the pay cut, and also terminated the lease of the player’s company car and flat. Dorado took the club to court and an award was made in his favour. Flynn refuted the decision and the SFA banned Livingston from transferring players into or out of the club, until the player was paid. Incensed by the loss of the court case, Flynn branded Dorado “a terrorist”, to which the player responded:

'When you look at what is happening in the world it is unbelievable that someone can refer to a sporting matter and call someone a terrorist. Flynn is lying to the supporters. He says he offered me £30,000: the true figure was £3,000, which was disrespectful. It is typical of his bullshit.' ^[13]

In March 2007 Flynn sold his 4.44% share of Celtic FC announcing a further £750,000 investment in Livingston. He committed his future to the club and reiterated his desire to see them once again in the SPL. ^[14]

Later that year, with Livingston struggling in the First Division, Flynn announced that the underground heating had been decommissioned at Almondvale, in an attempt to save money at the troubled club, and that he would welcome external investment. In March of that year an attempt to sell the club to Eddie Ramsay, with the intention of turning the stadium into a dog track, fell through. Investment was finally obtained from Irish businessman Anthony McMullen who took a 50% stake in the clubs parent company. ^[15]

In January 2008 Flynn’s company and club sponsor Smarter Loan Ltd were forced into liquidation, quickly followed by Contact4U Ltd. The closures led to widespread criticism from employees that they had been laid off with as little as ten minutes notice and hundreds of thousands of pounds of unpaid salary .^[16] Irish development agency Udaras also expressed concern and demanded repayment of £2M of grant aid that had been invested in the companies. ^[17]

Following the liquidation of Smarter Loan Ltd and Contact4 Ltd, Flynn has focussed on two new call centre companies, Credit Fix Ltd and Red2Black UK Finance Ltd, both of which promote IVA‘s and Debt Management to individuals and companies in financial trouble.

LAS Is a standard format in the Oil and Gas Industry, It is used to store Well Log Data.

It can Store multiple Log Curves as long as they have the same depth interval.

As with many programs in the Oil and Gas Industry different programs are known to not adhere to a specfic standard. Some programs are known to have issues reading LAS files that word wrap the different curves.

Paden Tolbert (c. 1863 or 1870-April 24, 1904) was a 19th century American law enforcement officer and railroad agent. He was one of the leading deputy U.S. Marshals in the Indian Territory during the 1880s and 90s and often worked with other well-known lawmen of his time including Bud Ledbetter, Heck Thomas and Bill Tilghman. He and his brother John Tolbert were both deputy marshals under "The Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker. ^[18] He was one of many young deputies used by Judge Parker in the U.S. District Courts in Fort Smith and Muskogee that included J.H. Mershon, A.J. Trail, Heck Bruner, Sam Sixkiller, Wes Bowman and Bass Reeves. ^[19] A reputation for courage and devotion to service, Marshal Leo E. Bennett stated that he considered him "one of the bravest men that he ever had on the force".

He and G.S. "Cap" White led the posse that was sent from Fort Smith to apprehend Ned Christie in the third and final attempt to force him from his mountain fortress. The siege lasted two days and involved dynamite and a cannon to destroy the hideout; this was the first and only time a cannon was used on civilians by law enforcement officers. He and Ledbetter are also credited for foiling the infamous 1894 train robbery at Blackstone Switch which led to the capture of Nathaniel "Texas Jack" Reed and his gang as well as the capture of the Jennings Gang in 1897.

As well as having the town of Paden, Oklahoma named in his honor, ^[20] his family were the first to introduce Elberta peaches to Clarksville, Arkansas and for which the city remains famous for. ^[21]

The eldest of eight children born to James Russell Tolbert and Elizabeth Miller, Paden Tolbert grew up in Griffin, Georgia during Reconstruction. The Tolbert family had been well off prior to the American Civil War, his father James had graduated from the University of Georgia and studied law in Tennessee before becoming a journalist. His family lived in Macon and Georgia during the war while his father reported for the Atlanta Constitution and afterwards tried his hand at farming in Pike County but was unsuccessful at it. In 1880, his father sold the family estate in Griffin and traveled by train to Clarksville, Arkansas where he became successful in growing peach trees and introducing the Elberta peach.

Paden became a schoolmaster in Johnson County for a time before pursuing a career as a law enforcement officer. He traveled to Fort Smith and, at age 22, became a deputy U.S. Marshal under "The Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker. Prior to this, he had married his childhood sweetheart Lucy Rose Turner and moved their family to the Indian Territory shortly after becoming a deputy marshal. His brother John would also become a deputy marshal at Fort Smith and the two would briefly work together. Another deputy he would work with was Bud Ledbetter who together hunted down many notorious outlaws in the Indian Territory. ^[22]

[edit] Seige of Ned's Fort Mountain

He and deputy marshal G.S. "Cap" White led the 16-man posse who rode after Ned Chrstie, ^[23] among those included Heck Thomas, Bud Ledbetter and his brother John Tolbert, after being charged with the murder of deputy marshal Daniel Maples. While the rest of the posse stocked up on extra weapons including rifles, revolvers and small-arms ammunition, Tolbert traveled over 250 miles to Coffeyville, Kansas and brought back a US Army cannon firing three-pound shells. ^{[24] [25]}

On the morning of November 2, 1894, Tolbert and the rest of the posse surrounded the near impregnable wooden fortress known as the "Rabbit Trap" in the Going Snake District, a mountainous region of the Cherokee nation (near present-day Talequah, Oklahoma). Christie had successfully fought off previous attempts to apprehend him for well over a year before their arrival. After cannonfire and over 2,000 bullets fired at the double-tiered log fortification proved ineffective, it seemed that this would also be the case.

As night fell, Tolbert and the others on building a portable barricade. Using the charred rear axle and wheels from the burned out lumber wagon used to assault the fort the previous month, they built and mounted a thick wall from scrap-oak timbers and loaded with rails. Finally, six sticks of dynamite was brought out and used to breach the fort's walls. Sometime near midnight, Tolbert helped push the wagon towards the cabin with White, Charley Copeland, Bill Ellis and Bill Smith. While Christie and his partner fought off the posse from the second story gunports, the rest of the posse provided covering fire until the men were close enough to dynamite the south wall of the house. Although surviving the explosion, Christie made a run for the surrounding woods and was gunned down by Paden and others. ^[26]

[edit] Texas Jack & the Jennings Gang

Two years later, he and several other U.S. Marshals were contacted by the American Express Company requesting protection when they received information of a suspected holdup from one of their agents in Dallas. On November 13, 1894, he and Ledbetter were aboard the express car along with Sid Johnson, Frank Jones and as many as three Pinkerton detectives. The train was moving at top speed when it was stopped by Nathaniel "Texas Jack" Reed and his gang. Although calling on the lawmen to get out of the express car, Tolbert and the others refused to surrender and instead began firing at them. The gunfight continued for over an hour and a half until one of Reed's men, Charley Belstead, was killed. Reed then ran towards the passenger car, carrying dynamite with him, and tried to blow the express car. Failing this, he instead held up the passenger car. Although erroneously reported killed as he and his men made their getaway, Ledbetter managed to wound Reed. The failure of this attack resulted in a manhunt for the fugitives and the eventual capture of Reed. ^[27]

[edit] Capture of the Jenning Gang and later life

In mid-July 1897, he and Ledbetter again rode together to bring in members of the Jennings Gang, brothers Alan and Frank Jennings. During their search, they learned that "Al Jennings and other parties ... who were going about in the Northern District of the Indian Territory under assumed names". Tolbert and Ledbetter were sent after them with a warrant for their robbery of a post office at Foyll in Cherokee territory. They stayed on their trail for some time before tracking them to the Spike S ranch and, along with several others, surrounded the hideout. After a brief gunfight, they chased them a distance of 60 miles before apprehending them as well as Pat and Morris O'Malley. ^[28]

After a successful 12 year career, Paden retired and became a special officer for Fort Smith and Western Railroad. After only a few months, he became ill from congestion of the lungs and sent to Hot Springs, Arkansas to recover. ^[22] However, his condition did not improve and he died in Weleetka, Oklahoma on April 27, 1904. ^[29] He was buried in Oakland Cemetery near Clarksville, Arkansas four days later and, following his death, his widow was appointed honorary postmaster of Padeen, a town in the Indian Territory named after her husband. ^[22]

Isabelle Marilies Irmingard Countess of Egloffstein was born on March, 12th 1975 in Bamberg. Her parents are Albrecht Count of Egloffstein and Iniga Countess of Egloffstein, born Countess von der Recke von Volmerstein. She has a twin sister, Julie who married in 2002 Thibaud Count of Rohan-Chabot, and another, younger sister, Désirée Countess of Egloffstein. She also has a brother, Johannes Count of Egloffstein. Her younger sibblings are unmarried.

She grew up in Kunreuth castle and was educated in Germany, Switzerland and England. An art historian like her father, she worked for the Austrian auction house Dorotheum and for the "Stiftung Preussischer Kunstbesitz" foundation, Berlin.

In 2007 she married Prince Karl Emich zu Leiningen in a civil wedding at Amorbach, Germany. The prince is a notable figure in European aristocracy as his earlier life was overshadowed by a nasty family law suit forcing him to abdicate and thus losing much of his inheritance. The civil ceremony was preceeded by a quarrel of the father of the bride with the local registry office which refused to address the prince as "Erbprinz" (heriditary prince) for this not being the name noted on his birth certificate.

A religious wedding is due to follow on June, 6th 2008 in Pappenheim.

Elton on-the-hill is a small village in the Vale of Belvoir, about 14 miles East of Nottinghamshire, England. It contains one road, named Sutton Lane, although the nearest village to Elton is not Sutton but Granby. Elton has a population of about 50. It has one pub, and one church, but no other public buildings. The church is named St. Michael and All Angels and the nearest station to the village is the Elton and Orston railway station. The village is located very close to the A52 motorway.

The term logomachy is a depreciative term describing the behavior of people who only allow word-to-word interpretation of spoken or written terms, texts or words.

The word consists of two parts. The first comes from the greek word "logos" which means word.

Logomachy is intended or unintended one-sided and narrow-minded interpretation of expressions, texts and words that reduce their meaning to their original meaning. Therefore, logomachy ignores common word usage or meanings that result from a certain context (see syntax) by pedantic thinking. For instance, "consumption" originally means that something that has been used up does no longer exist. Outside scientific context the word is also used to describe usage that makes something unusable without letting it disappear completely, e. g. consumption of electricity. People who do logomachy would not accept the term "consumption of electricity" because (according to the law of conservation of energy) energy cannot be created or disappear. In extreme cases, logomachy can be repelling or offending.

Terms that are associated with similar meanings are "hair-splitting", "cavilling", "pedantry", "subletty", "finickiness" and "quibbling". These have in common that they are used in a deprecative way to describe one-sided exaggerated Points of view or behaviors that many people consider disturbing or ridiculous.

Borders and transition between clear and precise interpretation of terms, texts and words and one-sided pedantic "sticking to the letters" ^[30] may be indistinct and sometimes not clearly determinable. Logomachy may be used to express irony or sarcasm. Logogmachy can be used as well as a stilistic mean, for example in Word plays.
