Luis Muñoz, composer, arranger and percussionist, was born in San José, Costa Rica. Coming from a very musical family, Luis showed an early interest in the arts and spent his youth performing in Rock and Jazz groups. In 1972 Luis entered the University of Costa Rica where he studied both Architecture and Music. He studied privately at the National Music Conservatory and with the principal flutist of the National Symphony Orchestra. In 1974 Luis emigrated to the United States and there completed his Degree in Music Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara, under the tutelage of renown British composer Peter Fricker. For the last 30 years Luis Muñoz has written music for educational and sports documentaries, animation films, radio and television jingles, dance and theater. In addition, Muñoz has worked as a music producer and arranger, as well as a percussionist for numerous artists such as Airto Moreira, Etta James, Flora Purím and Jim Messina.

Luis Muñoz has made numerous recordings of his music throughout the years. In 1980, commissioned by the Costa Rican government, Muñoz wrote and recorded "COSTA RICA-COSTA RICA". Luis donated all the proceeds generated by the sales of that recording to the Red Cross in Nicaragua, a nation at the time desperately trying to heal itself from the effects of a devastating civil war. In 1988 he signed with CBS Records and recorded "LA VERDAD". In 1996, Fahrenheit Records "THE FRUIT OF EDEN", Co-produced by Dominic Camardella (who has helmed projects for Maynard Ferguson, Ottmar Liebert and Willie and Lobo), marked Muñoz's U. S. recording debut, an explosive introduction to a talent that had been wowing Latin America for years. In 1998, Muñoz brought listeners a more progressive and exotic expression on his next endeavor, "COMPASSION", continuing to evolve as an innovative force in instrumental music.

"I grew up in Costa Rica, which is right in the middle of the American continent," he muses, "and being in a place where every form of Latin music merges really had an impact on me. Coming from a large family that included amateur instrumentalists as well as professional composers, my involvement with music started at a very early age. I was constantly being exposed to the plentiful, multi-faceted world of Latin American music; the pleasure, inspiration and joy that came from that experience were very important factors in my decision to become a composer. I remember listening to the songs of Chilean Victor Jara and Violeta Parra; the voices of Mercedes Sosa and Milton Nascimento; the Argentinian Tango; the music of the Andean "Altiplano." I loved the music of Brazil, with the pulsating rhythms of the samba, the maracatú, the partido alto and the baião, plus the gentle beauty of the bossa nova; the cumbia from Colombia, the merengue from the Dominican Republic, the calypso from Trinidad, the norteña and ranchera music from Mexico, the bomba and plena from Puerto Rico and the music of Cuba. Cuban music, with it's deep African roots, has offered the world the gifts of the rumba, the cha-cha-cha, the son montuno, songo, mambo, guaracha and guaguancó, creating beats to which the entire world now dances." Muñoz continues, " ... In loving and appreciating these styles of music I grew up with, I would soon realize that there was much more yet to be discover. Early on I remember being exposed to the music of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, which ignited my unquenchable thirst for jazz. Then, during my early teens, the" British Invasion," and music from groups like the Beatles would introduce me to a new type of music and culture from other parts of the world. Naturally, as a student at the Music Conservatory of the University of Costa Rica, I found myself deeply intrigued with the classical music repertoire. Bach, Ravel, Chopin, Stravinsky ... the influences were many and varied. I was in awe of the vast emotional spectrum of classical music. The passion and depth, the rapture and relevance, the sheer magic that can only be found in some of the greatest works ever written."

In 2004 Muñoz released "VIDA" which received the acclaim of the music media worldwide. Among many accolades, DownBeat magazine gave it 4 stars, it was pronounced "Best Latin Jazz CD of the Year" by Jazzreview.com, "A truly Monumental Work" by Americas Magazine, "A Masterpiece" by world renowned music critic Mark Holston (Hispanic Magazine) and "One of the 10 best recordings of the year" by Latin Jazz Network. In 2006 Mr. Muñoz was given an ACAM award in Costa Rica, for Jazz Composer/Producer of the year.

In 2007 Mr. Muñoz releases his latest recording, "Of Soul and Shadow", a collection of 10 compositions that explore his Central American roots through the idioms of Costa Rican folklore, classical music and jazz. Of Soul and Shadow features the collaborative efforts of over 25 musicians, including special guests Adolfo Acosta (Tower of Power) on trumpet; percussionist Ramses Araya (Ruben Blades); chromatic harmonica player Ron Kalina; trombone player Ira Nepus (Diana Krall); and New York sensation Dave Binney on alto sax.

Jenna was born in La Jolla, CA on june 2nd 1989. When she was little, on the way to the supermarket her mom crashed in front of a power plant and she was inadvertedly exposed to radioactive material. At age six, she started to develop psychic powers. Throughout elementary school she used her powers to cheat on tests and torture class pets. She likes to play with animals and horseback ride.

Frank Chiu is a notable San Francisco figure. He has been protesting throughout the city of San Francisco for many years, usually wearing sun glasses and business attire with an unintelligable sign referring to "12 Galaxies." The Guardian named him "the year's best protestor." He has a bar named after his cause, the 12 Galaxies at 2565 Mission Street. His iconic image is often imitated at bay area events, including Bay to Breakers, the Gay Pride Parade and the Castro Holloween street party.

His cause is not clearly articulated, since his sign appears to be in an alien language that happens to use Roman letters. Speculation circulating the internet indicates that his neverending protest is in response to a Hollywood conspiracy that blocks the distribution of his films and would-be stardom.

Marianne Cruz, Miss Dominican Republic, won the Miss Continente Americano pageant held in Guayaquil (Ecuador) on June 30th. The 20-year old student and model stands 1.80 m tall and beat 21 other contestants for the title. She was 1st runner-up at the Miss Dominican Republic Universe pageant held in March.

The 1st runner-up was Miss Venezuela, Francys Lugo (who won the Sambil Model contest in Venezuela) ; and the 2nd runner-up was Miss Mexico (Gladys Castellanos), who was 1st runner-up at the Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2006 contest.

Completing the top 6 finalists were Brazil (Vivian Noronha), Chile (Nataly Chilet) and Puerto Rico (Uma Blasini).

Miss Brazil was elected Miss Photogenic, while Miss Costa Rica (Veronica Gonzalez) won the award for Most Beautiful Face.

Miss Ecuador (Lugina Cabezas) won the Miss Congeniality Award.

22 contestants competed in the event. Most of them were former Miss Universe contestants.

The winner was crowned by reigning titleholder, Mia Taveras also of the Dominican Republic. This is the 2nd time that the Miss Continente Americano contest is held.

Special guests included Miss Earth 2005, Alexandra Braun of Venezuela; and Miss Universe 2006, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico.

Campeonísimo MARTIN RODRIGUEZ.Nació en Medellín el 14 de abril de 1942. Su sobrenombre se debe a que se identificó con el héroe de la La Flecha Roja. Corrió su primera vuelta a Colombia en 1961, que ganó en 1963, 1964, 1966 y 1967. No tuvo suerte en Olímpicos, pero luego fue campeón mundial de los cuatro mil metros persecución en Italia, el 22 de agosto de 1971 y panamericano de la misma modalidad en Winnipeg,1967, y Cali (1971); Centroamericano y del Caribe en Kingston (1962), San Juan (1966) y Panamá (1970); Bolivariano en Quito (1965) y Maracaibo (1970); americano en Medellín (1969). El 7 de octubre de 1970, en México, batió el récord mundial de la hora. En 1973 se hizo profesional en el Bianchi-Campagnolo con el que ganó en 1973 el Baracchi, regresó en 1980 cuando ganó, por segunda vez, el Caracol de Pista. En 1983 fue agregado cultural en Italia. El escritor Eduardo Escobar es uno de los fundadores del movimiento nadaísta.

Ninguno como él, por el simple hecho de haber conseguido un título mundial y el récord mundial de la hora.

El único doble campeón de esta condición que ha tenido Colombia, país en el que este antioqueño de 57 años sigue siendo el gran ídolo deportivo.

Nació un martes, el 14 de abril de 1942, en el sector de Guayabal -Barrio Cristo Rey- y a los once días quedó huérfano por la muerte de su padre Victoriano, siendo la responsabilidad de la crianza a cargo de doña Gertrudis Gutiérrez, quien fue la encargada de levantarlo.

Y se levantó tan bien que llegó a ser el mejor ciclista de Colombia, bolivariano, centroamericano, americano, panamericano y mundial. Hizo más de 70 mil kilómetros en competencias alrededor del planeta, habiendo visitado 22 países.

Según el historiador deportivo Tobías Carvajal Crespo, Martín Emilio Rodríguez Gutiérrez cruzó la meta victorioso en 82 ocasiones, ganando etapas hasta en el Giro de Italia cuando militó en la década de los setentas en el Bianchi Campagnolo al lado de uno de los monstruos mundiales de la época, Felice Gimondi.

Su primera victoria parcial en la Vuelta a Colombia la alcanzó el 29 de mayo de 1961, con motivo de la etapa Armenia-Tuluá, siendo apenas un novato. Desde ese día nadie dentro del ciclismo nacional olvidaría ese contagioso apodo de "Cochise" -personaje indígena de una película de vaqueros-, que entre 1963 y 1967 conservaría una hegemonía absoluta al conquistar cuatro títulos y un subtítulo de la ronda.

Aunque no la pudo ganar, dos de sus actuaciones consagratorias las realizó en la Vuelta de la Juventud Mexicana, siendo segundo detrás del local Porfirio Remigio, en 1964 cuando perdió por 11 segundos y en 1967, como escolta del también colombiano Alvaro Pachón Morales, en competencias que tuvieron decenas de corredores europeos y americanos.

El auténtico ídolo que se ha sabido manejar como tal desde sus épocas de gloria hasta el día de hoy cuando con sus libros bajo el brazo sostiene a su familia, conservándose en esa esencia de hombre sencillo, dicharachero y gozón que bien se puede comparar con el desfile de silleteros, porque cuando pasa "Cochise", es Antioquia la que pasa.

Las hazañas Uno de los más recordados sucesos del deporte colombiano, tiene que ver con "Cochise" Rodríguez, toda vez que el país no contaba en los comienzos de los años setentas con un campeón del mundo en ninguna actividad muscular.

La ruta de los éxitos para Martín Emilio se inició con el récord de la hora que logró en el velódromo Agustín Melgar, de Ciudad de México, al hacer un recorrido de 47.566,24 kilómetros, superando el registro de 47.513,69, que estaba en poder del danés Morgens Freys Jenssen, fijada un año antes. "Cochise" avanzó 52 metros y 55 centímetros más que el corredor europeo, el día 7 de octubre de 1970.

La persecución El título mundial de los 4.000 metros, persecución individual, lo conquistó Rodríguez Gutiérrez, en Varese, Italia, en 1971, con motivo del Campeonato Mundial de Pista, en cuya final superó al suizo Joseph Fuchs, con tiempo de 4:53:98.

Goro Nickel is a nickel and cobalt ore mining and production company located in the south of New Caledonia. Its majority shareholder, CVRD–Inco Limited, is also its technology partner.

The progressive start-up of the mining and industrial complex currently under construction will commence in 2009. To process the ore, the project will be using leading-edge technology developed by Inco: this fourth-generation hydrometallurgical process will provide a cost-effective means of processing laterite with a low nickel content, thereby ensuring low-cost production and reducing the plant's impact on the environment. The Goro plateau nickel and cobalt deposit is one of the largest in the world. It provides Goro Nickel with a production capacity of 60,000 tonnes of nickel in the form of nickel oxide and 4,500 tonnes of cobalt in the form of cobalt carbonate.

Goro Nickel is a responsible company which aims to produce the metals that the market requires while at the same respecting the environment, the people and the French territory where it is located, using the best technology available, at an economically viable cost, so as to contribute to local development and establish itself as a responsible member of the community.

Goro Nickel is committed to applying the best technologies available with a view to optimising the protection of an environment which it knows to be fragile. The most rigorous emission standards are being applied, the precautionary approach is being adopted and a program is in place for the mining sites to be fully rehabilitated using endemic local species.

Goro Nickel is listening to the communities surrounding it and working with them on the development of programs designed to manage the impacts on neighbouring populations so as to maximise the positive side-effects and minimise the negative ones.

The Angry Samoan and Malt Liquor Man are a brainchild from creator/poet Shawn Evans. While in Highschool, Evans was nicknamed the Angry Samoan in reference to his similarities to that of the U.S. punk band the Angry Samoans. Evans wrote a short story, and then gave it to his friend Jon Karl Dekok. Dekok, who was a skilled up and coming artist at the time added illustrations, and the ensemble had created their first comic. The two later went their seperate ways, as Dekok moved to the Okanagon, and Evans stay put in Smithers, BC.

The themes in the comic are that of the Angry Samoan who with his own discovery creates a very powerful hydroponic, thus giving him super-human powers. While Malt Liquor Man, while driiving a beertruck has a freak accident and feeds his strength through consuming beer...and lots of it!

Sources close to Evans and Dekok say the two have re-connected and are currently working on a 16 episode comic series, titled: Six-Pack and Pipes in the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

Evans main influences are Guy Ritchie films, Beserk (manga), TAco-Bell and un-protected sex with cannibals.
