[edit] Kneazle
A fictional creature from the famous Harry Potter novels by JK Rowling. [edit] DescriptionThe kneazle is a small catlike creature with flecked, speckled, or spotted fur, outsize ears, and a tail like a lion's. The kneazle is intelligent, independent, and occasionaly aggresive, though if it takes a liking to a witch or wizard it is an excellent pet. It also has an uncanny ability to detect suspicious characters (i.e. Petter Pettigrew/Scabbers). The kneazle will also safely guide a lost owner home. [edit] BreedingKneazles have litters of up to eighteen kittens and can interbreed with cats (see Famous Kneazles). A liscence is required for ownership as the unusual appearance of a kneazle can attract much Muggle interest. [edit] Famous KneazleCrookshanks - although only half kneazle, a wise and dedicated pet to Hermione Granger, he displayed his inherited kneazle intelligent helping to indentify the once presumed-dead Petter Pettigrew. [edit] H.C. Erik Midelfort
He was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and attended Yale University where he received a B.A. in History in 1964. He remained there for graduate studies in History under the supervision of Jaroslav Pelikan and other noted scholars such as Hajo Holborn. In 1970, he graduated from Yale, and his first book (Witch Hunting in Southwestern Germany, 1562-1684: The Social and Intellectual Foundations) won the Gustav O. Arlt Award in the Humanities in 1973 from the Council of Graduate Schools in the United States. From 1968 to 1970, he taught at Stanford University, and throughout his career, he has been a visiting scholar at Bern, Stuttgart, Harvard, and Oxford. Since 1970, he has been a member of the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia. In addition to his early work on witchcraft, Midelfort is perhaps best known for his award-winning studies on madness. In 1994, he published Mad Princes in Renaissance Germany and, in 1999, A History of Madness in Sixteenth-Century Germany. For both books, he won the Roland Bainton Prize for the best book of the year in History and Theology from the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference. He is the only scholar to win the award twice. For the latter study, Midelfort also received from the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award from Phi Beta Kappa. More recently, Midelfort was selected as the lecturer-in-residence for the Dwight H. Terry Lectures at Yale University, during which he presented his latest book-length work, Exorcism and Enlightenment: Johann Joseph Gassner and the Demons of 18th-Century Germany (2005). Because of his extensive work in translation of secondary sources, Midelfort is also well-known for strengthening connections between his German and American colleagues. Among the seminal works that he has translated on the German Reformation are Peter Blickle’s The Revolution of 1525 (co-translator with Thomas Brady) and Bernd Moeller’s Imperial Cities and the Reformation, Three Essays (co-translator with Mark U. Edwards). He has been awarded grants from numerous organizations, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and in 2004, he was the recipient of a Festschrift, or commemorative volume, presented by his German colleagues: Wider alle Hexerei und Teufelswerk: Die europäische Hexenverfolgung und ihre Auswirkungen auf Südwestdeutschland, ed. Sönke Lorenz and Jürgen Michael Schmidt. [edit] Sourceshttp://www.virginia.edu/history/faculty/midelfort.html, http://www.yale.edu/terrylecture/midelfort.html Wassi25 05:09, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jana Fraiser
{{Stargate character }} Dr. Jana Fraiser was a fictional character in the Stargate SG-1 TV series, played by Teryl Rothery. [edit] Character BiographyPrior to joining Stargate Command, Dr. Jana Fraiser served as chief of the Aeromedical Services at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Her medical education includes a B.A. magna cum laude in chemistry and biology and an M.D. at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Jana was married before she came to the SGC, but it ended badly. She told Carter that her husband "took the term 'this man's army' a bit literally." As the Chief Medical Officer of Stargate Command, Dr. Fraiser was responsible for maintaining the health of the SG teams, as well as the SGC's support staff and base personnel. On many occasions Fraiser was also responsible for the health of alien refugees to Earth, including Goa'uld symbiotes. She took the lead role in identifying infectious diseases, which are a constant threat when exploring new worlds, and developed various medcial solutions to the problems faced when caring for alien beings. She defended her medical principles as strongly as her patients, sometimes in contradiction to near-term mission goals and regardless of the identity of her patients. Over her years with the SGC, Jana became the foremost expert on Goa'uld symbiotes. She pioneered numerous technological advancements, and became an expert at regulating and administering Tretonin. Jana was killed in action during a rescue mission to P3X-666; she was attempting to treat a wounded soldier when she was hit and killed by an errant staff blast. [edit] Notable Appearances[edit] IntroductionJana Fraiser first appeared in season one, when she endeavored to find a cure to an alien disease that turned humans into caveman-like creatures. She succeeds in developing a cure based on anti-histamine medication both she and Daniel Jackson take for allergies.[2] [edit] Capturing HathorLater in the season, Dr. Fraiser is one of several women enlisted by then-Captain Carter to capture the Goa'uld queen Hathor from the brainwashed males at the SGC. In this episode, she reveals her ex-husband was a chauvinist, taking the slogan 'this man's army' a little too literally.[3] [edit] CassandraSoon after, Fraiser adopted Cassandra - an alien orphan whose people had been exterminated by the Goa'uld System Lord Nirrti. Later, in season five, we see more of the relationship between Jana and Cassandra. Strained as it may be, Jana cares for Cassandra as if she were her own daughter.[4][5] [edit] Treating ApophisWhen Apophis demanded asylum on Earth in season two, Fraiser treated his injuries against the wishes of most of the members of SG-1. His injuries were ultimately too severe and despite her best efforts, she could prevent the passing of neither the symbiote or its host.[6] [edit] 2010In the year 2010 (in an alternate timeline), Fraiser and Carter discover a conspiracy on Earth engineered by the Aschen to sterilize the entire population so as to eventually have uncontested control of the planet. In the alternate timeline, Fraiser had become obsolete after the arrival of the Aschen, who brought far more advanced medical technology with them. It is because she still maintains her 'old' equipment that Carter and Fraiser begin to suspect the Aschen are sterilizing the population, and she and SG-1 are eventually able to alter the timeline to prevent the Aschen from gaining a foothold on Earth.[7] [edit] DeathWhen a film crew comes to document the SGC in late season seven, Fraiser was interviewed for Emmett Bregman's documentary celebrating the 1000th trip through the Stargate. During a shared meal with the documentarian, Fraiser was called away to a medical emergency on P3X-666 where she treated Senior Airman Simon Wells for a staff blast wound. Unfortunately, she was shot by a Jaffa that had penetrated the guards perimeter - the blast killed her instantly. Dr. Jackson, who had been filming a message for Airman Wells' wife, caught the incident on camera. Her loss greatly affected all SGC personnel, and was noted to the very top of the U.S. Administration as a tragic loss.[8] Airman Wells survived thanks to Dr. Frasier and named his daughter "Jana" in honor of Dr. Frasier. [edit] Re-AppearanceFraiser later returned in season nine, as an alternate reality version of Dr. Fraiser that appears when several SG-1 teams from alternate realities are pulled together; in her reality, she survived the mission and joined SG-1 as a regular member. In an emotional moment, Carter, Jackson and Teal'c are able to say goodbye to her as they couldn't do before her death.[9] [edit] EulogySamantha Carter, speaking at Jana Fraiser's memorial, held inside the Gate Room at Stargate Command: {{cquote|Jana Fraiser was an extraordinary person. She was kind and funny and talented. Above all, she was courageous. Try as I might, I could not find the words to honour her, to do justice to her life. Thankfully, I got some help. While words alone may not be enough, there are some names that might do. We often talk about those that give their lives in the service of their country, and while Jana Fraiser did just that, that's not what her life was about. The following are the names of the men and women who did not die in service, but who are in fact alive today, because of Jana. Major Samantha Carter. Doctor Daniel Jackson. Colonel Jack O'Neill. Teal'c. Sergeant Connie Smith. Major Ian Hules. Senior Airman Simon Well... (fades)}} [edit] References{{Reflist|2}} [edit] External links

[edit] Voodoo Queen (Van Halen Song)
Voodoo Queen is an unreleased song by the American Hard Rock Band Van Halen. It was never officially released on any Van Halen Album, although it does appear on the famous Gene Simmons Demos and other assorted demos done by the band prior to their debut in 1978. Most of the guitar, bass, and drum work was used to create the song Mean Street, from Van Halen's Fair Warning(1981) album. The main riff is the consistency, while the verses were used to accompany Mean Street's chorus. Voodoo Queen's chorus musical arrangement never saw the light of a Van Halen album, and the guitar solos were completely different. The ending of the song was also taken and used for the ending of Van Halen's Hot For Teacher(1984). [edit] Gurdwara San Sahib
Guru Angad Dev Ji pronounced Guru Amar Das Ji to be the next Guru at a city named Goindwal. This angered Datu, the son of Guru Angad Dev Ji, and as a result Datu forcibly told Guru Amar Das Ji to leave Goindwal. Guru Amar Das Ji obeyed in order to avert conflict and returned to his family village of Basarke. Here the Guru secluded himself in a small hut with a note on the door reading 'He who opens this door is no Sikh of mine, nor am I his Guru.' A delegation of Sikhs lead by Baba Buddha found Guru Angad Dev Ji in the hut at Basarke. Not wanting to defy the note written by Guru Amar Das Ji they devised a plan. Rather than entering through the door they created a hole in the wall of the room and entered instead through this hole. Once inside they pleaded with the Guru to return to Goindwal as only he was their true beloved Guru and the Sikhs could not live without him. Guru Amar Das Ji finally relented and returned with the Sikhs to Goindwal. [edit] nepenthes aristolochoides
The nepenthes aristolochoides is one of the weirdist carnivorous plants. It is a very rare type of pitcher plant the is around the NE Status. Unlike other pitcher plants it has the hole on the side of the plant, not the top. It only originates in a mountan range that has barily any of this plant on it. You would be lucky to oun one. The first source baffles me; what is it, and what does it reveal about Chris Cox? Is there a transcript? The second source is all right, but it's a bit inflated and talks primarily about the new show, not about Cox himself. The third link is an article written by Cox, which doesn't provide any information about him. The fourth is his personal web site. None of these are sufficient to establish notability. |

[edit] Ron Sun
Ron Sun is a cognitive scientist, and currently Professor of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and formerly the James C. Dowell Professor of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at University of Missouri-Columbia. He received his Ph.D in 1992 from Brandeis University. His research interest centers around the study of cognition, especially in the areas of cognitive architectures, human reasoning and learning, cognitive social simulation, and hybrid connectionist-symbolic models. For his paper on integrating rule-based and connectionist models for accounting for human everyday reasoning, he received the 1991 David Marr Award from Cognitive Science Society. For his work on human skill learning, he received the 2008 Hebb Award from the International Neural Network Society. Throughout the past two decades, he has been conducting research in the fields of psychological learning and hybrid neural networks (by applying these models to research on human skill acquisition). Specifically, he has worked on the integrated effect of top-down and bottom-up learning in human skill acquisition in a variety of task domains, for example, navigation tasks (Sun, Merrill, & Peterson, 2001), reasoning tasks, and implicit learning tasks (Sun, Slusarz, & Terry, 2005). This inclusion of bottom-up learning processes has been revolutionary in cognitive psychology, because most previous models of learning have focused exclusively on top-down learning (whereas human learning clearly happens in both directions). This research has culminated with the development of an integrated cognitive architecture that can be used to provide a quantitative explanation of empirical psychological learning data. The model, CLARION, is a hybrid neural network that can be used to simulate problem solving and social interactions as well. More importantly, CLARION was the first psychological model that proposed an explanation for the “bottom-up learning” mechanisms present in human skill acquisition: His numerous papers on the subject have brought attention to this neglected area in cognitive psychology. He is the founding co-editor-in-chief of the journal Cognitive Systems Research, and also serves on the editorial boards of many other journals. He is the general chair and the program chair of CogSci 2006, and the program chair of IJCNN 2007. He is a member of the Governing Boards of Cognitive Science Society and International Neural Networks Society. His URL is: http://www.cogsci.rpi.edu/~rsun Books: R. [edit] USS General George M. Randall (AP-115)
General George M. Randall was a General John Pope class P2-S2-R2 transport built to commercial standards. The ship was launched at the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, in Kearny, New Jersey on 30 January 1944 under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. Robert A. Lovett, wife of the Assistant Secretary of War for Air; acquired and simultaneously commissioned on 15 April 1944, with Captain Carl C. von Paulsen, USCG, in command. General George M. Randall sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, on 23 May 1944 with nearly 5,000 troops and casuals aboard, and sailing through the Panama Canal, put in at Bombay, India, on 5 July via Panama and Australia. Underway again 6 days later, she returned to San Pedro, California, on 12 August to debark over 2,000 wounded veterans. She made two more round-trip voyages from San Pedro to Bombay from 30 August 1944 to 28 February 1945. Following a round-trip voyage from San Francisco, California, to Ulithi and back, the ship stood out under the Golden Gate on 8 June 1945 for Norfolk, arriving there on 20 June. She sailed from that port for Marseille, France, where she arrived on 8 July. There she embarked troops for redeployment in the Pacific theater. She departed on 10 July, passing through the Panama Canal for the third time, with the destination of Okinawa. When she got to the Pacific area, the war had ended, so she was directed to offload them at Manila before proceeding to San Pedro, California, where she arrived on 21 September, after the war's end. As part of the "Magic-Carpet" fleet, General George M. Randall made six voyages from San Francisco and San Diego to the Far East, calling at Japan, China, Okinawa, and the Philippines. The first two of these trips were to re-patriate Japanese diplomats and their families back to Japan. She sailed from Pearl Harbor on 1 December 1946 for the east coast; and after undergoing peacetime alterations at Philadelphia, stood out of that port on 2 April 1947. Reaching San Francisco on 25 April, the transport began a series of shuttle runs between West Coast ports and the Far East, completing six voyages to Guam, two to China and Japan, and two to Hawaii before she was assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) in October 1949. As an MSTS ship, General George M. Randall made scheduled runs between the West Coast and the Orient until fighting erupted in Korea in the summer of 1950. She participated in the amphibious assault at Inchon which routed the North Korean Army and forced Communist evacuation of South Korea. After hordes of Chinese Communist troops poured into Korea and trapped American forces, she served in the evacuation of Hungnam, which saved the embattled G.I.'s enabling them to return to the fight. She moored at New York, New York, on 26 May 1951, and made four voyages from New York to Bremerhaven and Southampton before returning to Yokohama on 24 October 1951 via San Francisco. For the next 3 years this far-ranging ship transported men and equipment across the Pacific between West Coast ports and Japan, Okinawa, and Formosa. In 1955 she shifted operations to the East Coast, arriving New York on 8 April 1955 for shuttle runs from New York to Bremerhaven, insuring the continuous flow of troops, dependents, and supplies to American forces in Europe. During first 3 months of 1957 she cruised the Caribbean, calling at Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica before resuming her North Atlantic transport runs out of New York 15 April. These varied duties were highlighted by General George M. Randall's role in the 1958 Lebanon crises. Embarking 1,255 troops of the 35th Tank Battalion at Bremerhaven, and 1,001 other at La Pallice, France, she put them ashore at Beirut, Lebanon, the morning of 3 August 1958, helping to stabilize that strategic country in this swift followup by sea of the 6th Fleet's powerful and effective action with aircraft carrier planes, surface warships, and amphibious landing of Marines. General George M. Randall then returned to New York, arriving there on 16 August. Returning to her New York-Bremerton schedule, General George M. Randall visited Spain, Turkey, Greece, and Italy in 1959, and called at ports in Iceland and the Caribbean Islands during the next year as well. On her last voyage, she cast off from Rota, Spain, and moored at New York on 13 May 1961. General George M. Randall steamed thence to Bayonne, New Jersey, where she was decommissionedon 2 June 1961; she was towed to Norfolk on 12 June to join the Maritime Administration National Defense Reserve Fleet on 16 August, at James River, Virginia. In 1975, she was towed to Taiwan for scrapping. [edit] Sources{{DANFS}} 68.61.35.13 23:58, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
