[edit] Mike Walsh (Footballer)
Michael Walsh, (born June 20, 1956 in Manchester) was a defender who played for many clubs. He was probably best known as a captain of Bolton Wanderers F.C and also for gaining honours representing the Republic of Ireland. [edit] Playing career Born and raised in Manchester, Walsh was snapped up as a 17 year old by Bolton Wanderers F.C. He made his debut as an 18year old and quickly established a reputation as a no-nonsense defender with incredible bravery and attitude. This was rewarded by his manager Ian Greaves who made him captain. This was no mean feat in a team that included characters such as Peter Reid, Sam Allardyce and Frank Worthington. Walsh stayed with Bolton from 1974-1981. During this time he made 169 league appearances (+8 as sub), scored 4 goals, and in 1978 lead the club to the top flight as champions of the old second division, after narrowly missing promotion the season before. In 1981, Walsh was snapped up by Howard Kendall at Everton for £90,000 plus Seamus McDonagh. Walsh was one of Howard Kendall's famous 'magnificent seven' signings. He later took up loan spells at Norwich City and Burnley. In 1983 he was offered the opportunity to play in Florida for George Best's old team Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The club went bust within a season though and Walsh was quickly back home. Next stop was Manchester City but within four months he signed for Blackpool where he went on to give a further 144 league appearances. [edit] Post-playing career Walsh followed his Blackpool manager Sam Ellis to Bury F.C as the first team coach. Upon Ellis' departure to Maine Road to join Peter Reid as his assistant, Walsh took up the reigns as manager in September 1990. His time as manager lasted five years, during which he took the club to the play-offs three times, including the club's first appearance at Wembley. All this was during a time where the club had a massive financial burden and many players had to be sold to keep the club afloat. Just five games after losing in the wembley play-off final, Walsh was cruely sacked as the Chairman became impatient despite the club having no finances to improve the team. After a brief spell of taking Barrow to the top of their division, Walsh's old Everton team mate Steve McMahon asked Walsh to join him at Swindon Town F.C as his assistant in 1997. Walsh also stayed on to assist Jimmy Quinn after McMahon's resignation late in 1998. After being made redundant by Swindon Town, he became Peter Reid's Chief Scout at Sunderland. In 2003 he had a brief spell as manager of Southport where he unfortunately couldn't save a sinking ship and the club suffered relegation out of the Conference. Walsh was then asked back to Swindon Town as Andy King's assistant in 2004, but and decided to retire from the game a year later, and is now running a restaurant in Javea, Spain. [edit] Anichkov, Nikolai Nikolaevich
Anichkov, Nikolai Nikolaevich (often spelled Anitschkow in German literature) (1885-1964) was one of prominent pathologists, Doctor of Medicine (1909), Doctor of Sciences (1912), Professor of Pathology (1920), lieutenant-general of Medical Corps, State award holder (1940), Fellow of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Medical Sciences of USSR, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1946–53). One may find his biography in many encyclopedias of Russia and other countries. Anichkov described first the specialized myocardial cells (Anitschkow cells) and discovered the significance and role of cholesterol in atherosclerosis pathogenesis. In 1958, in an editorial in Annals of Internal Medicine, William Dock compared the significance of the classic work of Anichkov to that of the discovery of the tubercle bacillus by Robert Koch. The well known American biochemist D. Steinberg wrote: "If the full significance of his findings had been appreciated at the time, we might have saved more than 30 years in the long struggle to settle the cholesterol controversy and Anitschkow might have won a Nobel Prize" (J. Lipid Res., 2004, Vol. 45, p. 1583-93). Anichkov has much elaborated on the doctrines of reticuloendothelial system and autogenic infections. His father, Nikolai M. Anichkov (1844–1916) was a representative of ancient Russian nobility and held the position of Vice-Minister of Education of the Russian Empire. His mother, L. I. Vasiliyeva (1859–1924), was the daughter of a priest that was founder of the Alexander Nevsky Orthodox church in Rue Daru, Paris. In 1903, Anichkov entered the Imperial Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. There, he became a pupil of prominent Russian histologist Alexander Maximow (1874–1928) and later, in Freiburg, a pupil of the famous German pathologist Karl Albert Ludwig Aschoff (1866–1942). Upon his graduation in 1909, Anichkov began to work on his doctoral thesis, titled “Inflammatory changes in myocardium: apropos of myocarditis,” and he successfully defended it in 1912. In this thesis, he first described the “myocyte” that today bears his name. At the same time, Anichkov worked on an experimental model of atherosclerosis together with a student S. Chalatov. Finally, they created a model of experimental atherosclerosis, which was recognized as “classic” and used by a great number of researchers. In 1912, Anichkov moved to Freiburg to work under famous German pathologist L. Aschoff. The latter was very interested in Anichkov's experimental work made in Russia. Thus, Anichkov began to work in the most advanced scientific environment of the time. In Germany he became the first to describe the “cholesterinesterphagozyten,” which derive from macrophages and today are known as foam cells. By histological analyzing atherosclerotic plaque's development, Anichkov identified the cell types involved in the atherosclerotic process: smooth muscle cells, macrophages, and lymphocytes. Finally, he discovered the leading role of cholesterol in atherosclerosis development (“There is no atherosclerosis without a cholesterol”.). Anichkov had worked in Aschoff's laboratory up to the World War I broke out in August 1914. Then he joined the Russian Army Medical Corps and, from 1914 to 1917, was appointed as a physician-in-charge. In 1920, Anichkov was appointed Professor of the Department of Pathological physiology of the Military Medical Academy, a position that he held until 1939. Subsequently, he presented updates on atherosclerosis research at the Congresses in Berlin, Freiburg, Würzburg and Wiesbaden, and at meetings of the Swedish Society of Pathologists, and the International Society of Geographic Pathology. In 1930, after the Congress in Osaka, he went to Tokyo, Niigata, and Kyoto, to deliver a lecture “On experimental atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries of the heart.” So, Anichkov's work on atherosclerosis was gaining worldwide recognition. Then he wrote a chapter in E.V. Cowdry's Arteriosclerosis: A Survey of the Problem, in 1933. In 1939-46, the lieutenant-general of Medical Corps Anichkov headed the Military Medical Academy's Department of Pathological anatomy. In 1942, Anichkov and A. I. Abrikosov received a State award for their textbook Pathological Anatomy of the Heart and Vessels, in which they gave a detailed account of the development of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. In their 1998 book titled Medicine's 10 Greatest Discoveries, M. Friedman and M. Friedland included the Anichkov's cholesterol theory in the list of greatest discoveries in Medicine. During Anichkov's work in the high state rank of President of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1946–53) he actively participated in the foundation of a number of research institutes and research journals. In this period and later he created a big research team in Russian pathology that consisted of 30 Professors and many Doctors. Anichkov was married twice. He had one son Mily (1920-1991), who subsequently became a Professor of Surgery and Colonel of Medical Corps. His grandson Nikolai M. Anichkov (born in 1941) is Professor of Pathology, Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Vice-President of the Russian Society of Pathology. All N. N. Anichkov's children and colleagues remembered him as a kind-hearted man who was always fair to his coworkers and good to his friends. He died on 7 December 1964 of a myocardial infarction. [edit] Tak-A-Boost Drink
Tak-A-Boost or Boost as it is often referred to, is a sugary, caffeine- loaded syrup and concentrate that includes a combination of citrus flavors. It is mixed with water or is made into a slushy and is a very popular drink in its main market area of Burlington County, New Jersey. The actual place that Tak-A-Boost was first invented was the small town of Riverside, located within Burlington County in southern New Jersey. This town is located approximately fifteen miles northeast of the city of Philadelphia and is rich with history. The town was founded in the year 1851 as a resort town for Philadelphians escaping summers in the city. It is also home to the Philadelphia Watch Case Company building, which remains standing today. This business was even the largest producer of watchcases in the world at one time. A pharmacist by the name of Benjamin R. Faunce first invented Tak-A-Boost in Riverside in his shop on Bridgeboro Street in the year 1913. It was first produced as a means to make certain tonics and medicines easier for his customers to take. Its flavor is sometimes likened to flat Coca-Cola. In small doses the syrup is still sometimes used as a home remedy for upset stomachs. The Boost! Company which produces this syrup is still based in the town of Riverside to this day. As mentioned before, the main market area for this product is within Burlington County, but it has attracted interest from and has been distributed to other locations. It can be found for sale in many supermarkets and other convenience stores and delis throughout Burlington County and at select locations otherwise. The name of the product is sometimes easy to confuse with the nutritional drink also called Boost. However, these two products are very different and are not related in any way. When Boost first came onto the market there was concern over the similarity between the two product names, but the issue was diffused when it was decided that it would not be a problem due to Tak-A-Boost's limited market area.
