Beginnings
In 1943, the Australian Army’s Colonel Alfred (Alf) Conlon, who had previously chaired Prime Minister John Curtin's committee on national morale, was assigned to the staff of the Army’s commander-in-chief, General Sir Thomas Blamey.
Conlon believed the Army needed a research section to tackle major strategic contingencies, such as what to do if Japan invaded Australia, and persuaded Blamey to establish a Directorate of Research and Civil Affairs.
Blamey assigned Conlon to head the Directorate, which also provided policy advice on the governance of the Trust Territory of Papua and the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, then under Australian administration and the scene of fierce fighting between Allied and Japanese forces. In his new role, Conlon assembled around him a group of talented Australian academics, among them John Kerr, James Plimsoll, James McAuley, Harold Stewart, Camilla Wedgwood, HIP Hogbin, WEH Stanner and Isa Leeson.
In 1945, as World War 2 was drawing to a close, the School of Civil Affairs broadened its role to train officers for the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU), responsible for civil administration in the Territories.
Originally located at Duntroon Military College in Canberra, in March 1946 the School was transferred to civilian control and renamed the Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA). In May 1947 it was relocated to a group of Army huts on Middle Head in the Sydney suburb of Mosman. ASOPA operated under the Papua New Guinea Act and was a responsibility of the Federal Minister for External Territories until 1 December 1973.
In 1946, John Kerr (later Sir John Kerr QC, Governor-General of Australia) was appointed as the first Principal of ASOPA and, at the same time, the first Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission. He returned to the bar in 1948, where he became one of Sydney's leading industrial lawyers. Conlon himself took over ASOPA and spent 1948-49 as a reportedly unsuccessful and unhappy Principal of the institution.
Operations
Immediately after the war, enrolments to study at ASOPA were restricted to servicemen and, when civilian candidates were admitted not long after, preference was given to those with working experience and good academic records. In the 27 years from 1946-73, ASOPA trained hundreds of personnel for service in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea (TPNG), the Northern Territory and Nauru. After initially acquiring field experience in TPNG, patrol officers spent a year at ASOPA studying subjects such as law, government and anthropology.
In 1954, ASOPA began to train Australian teachers for service in TPNG, to assist develop primary education. At the same time, courses were offered to teachers recruited for Special (Aboriginal) Schools in the Northern Territory of Australia. From 1956, teacher cadets were trained at distant Bathurst Teachers’ College. When the training course was eventually transferred to Middle Head in 1959, the trainee teachers were redesignated ‘cadet education officers’.
Cadet education officers trained for two years at ASOPA before going to TPNG. After three years service in TPNG, they qualified for the award of the New South Wales Teacher’s Certificate.
In addition to training patrol and education officers, shorter orientation and refresher programs were held for Australian professional personnel preparing to serve in TPNG and elsewhere in the South Pacific.
In its final ten years, ASOPA introduced training for secondary teachers and more specialised administration courses. In 1970 there was a major change of focus as, with Papua New Guinea independence looming, the Australian Government turned to ASOPA to help correct a serious lack of trained indigenous administrators. The School enrolled up to 60 Papuans and New Guineans in ten-month courses. At the same time, the training of Australians to serve in TPNG was phased out. In later years there was more internationalisation of ASOPA’s work. Although students from PNG remained strongly represented, increasing numbers of students from other developing countries in the Pacific and elsewhere were taken on.
Later years
In 1973, the year in which Australia granted self-government nted to Papua New Guinea, ASOPA became the International Training Institute (ITI) within the Australian Development Assistance Bureau, a division of the Department of Foreign Affairs. ITI provided management training for professionals from developing countries in the Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
A final shift – and change in name to Centre for Pacific Development and Training - saw the Middle Head campus used as a base for consultants operating in the South Pacific until this role came to an end late in 1997.
The history of ASOPA, and its successor institutions, reflected the changing political geography that occurred during the time of its existence. ASOPA started as a school for Australians going to leadership positions as expatriates in its territories. In its middle life, it offered courses to people from developing countries around the world. And, at the end, it was base for Australians who were consulting to the developing world.
At the end of World War 2, confronting the first of many threats to the School’s existence, John Kerr wrote: “The idea was opposed, and opposed in influential quarters. … We were determined that what had been created should not be destroyed. In this we succeeded.”
The old Army huts on Middle Head are now empty and desolate. But they have been heritage listed by the Commonwealth Government and now await refurbishment and regeneration into another role.

In the world of a Korean-Japanese city, life is chaotic. Police are everywhere, hospitals are full, and the city has a number of youth correction facilities. Why? It's because the schools there are violent, and many of them have been shut down many times because the students that attend there weren't taught any discipline, thanks to the city's corrupt school system.
In Public High school #1368, the most violent school in the city, the students there are what people would call "monsters." They beat up the staff, teachers, school property, and even the students there without showing even a shred of pity. A few more days until this school will be evaluated. If the school doesn't meet the expectations, it will be shut down. The staff has no other choice, but to call upon the famous student that brought order to even the most violent of schools: XIN. But can XIN bring down the school's handsome and demonic playboy Ghai and the school's strongest basebell player Andre?
XIN is one of the many flash series that was created by Life.1's creators, Steven Lim and Max Mao, and the characters voiced by the staff of Life.1. Multiple stories about young teenagers dealing with their corrupt school along with the school system, while trying to fix it at the same time. Watch as these young teenagers learn how to fix their corrupt school system, learn new things, and find true love.

[edit] Europe Central
Composed of a series of intertwined stories, Europe Central examines a vast array of characters, ranging from generals to martyrs, officers to poets, traitors to artists and musicians. Some are famous, like the post Anna Achmatova and the Russian Composer Dmitri Shostakovich, are infamous or unknown, like the renegade Russian General Vlasov or Kurt Gerstein, a young German who joins the SS to reveal its darkest secrets and try to halt its crimes.
Described by The New York Times Book Review as William T. Vollmann's "most welcoming work, possibly his best book… part novel and part stories, virtuoso historical remembrance and focused study of violence”, Europe Central deals with the moral decisions made by people in the most testing of times and offers a bold perspective on human actions during wartime.

[edit] Janor Hypercleets
(real name unknown) is one of early and more notable members of The Church of the Subgenius. His hell-fire hate rants made him controversial for some, but popular with others. It was not uncommon for him to threaten suicide during live performances, pulling out a revolver from a brown paper bag and placing it to his head. (This stunt was later repeated in real life by a disgraced Pennsylvanian politician who committed suicide at a press conference.) Hypercleets could be frequently heard on the Subgenius radio show, and he authored a story in the Subgenius book, Three Fisted Tales Of Bob.
