[edit] Shmuel Ashkenasi, Israeli Violinist
Chicago-based Israeli-born violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi has distinguished himself as quartet leader, soloist, and educator. He was born in 1943 in Israel and studied with Ilona Feher, teacher of such great violinists as Pinchas Zuckerman and Shlomo Mintz. He then studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Efrem Zimbalist. Ashkenasi was awarded top prizes in competitions such as the Tchaikovsky, Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, and Merriweather Post. In 1969 he founded the Vermeer Quartet, one of the premier string quartets of its time at the Marlboro Festival. The quartet has been in residence at Northern Illinois University and Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.
Shmuel Ashkenasi's recording of Paganini Violin Concertos No. 1 and 2 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra is one of the most fantastic recodings in existence of this virtuosic repertoire. In fact Shmuel Ashkenasi has a devoted "cult-like" following of many musicians. His playing is characterised by a sweet, full tone, with impeccable technique and musical taste. He is regarded by many as the greatest violinist to ever occupy the first violin chair of a major string quartet. He is currently Professor of Violin at the Hochschule fur Musik in Lubeck, Germany, Professor of Violin at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and has recently been appointed to the faculty of his alma mater, the Curtis Institute of Music.

[edit] Tanzania's citizens of european ethnicity
Enrico The first europeans who touched Tanzania’s coasts were the Portuguese, in the late XVth century, but they all fled the country before the end of the XVII century.
The first permanent european settlers there were Germans. During all the XIXth century hundred thousands of german peasants emigrated to the Americas to find land to coltivate. German authorities, when they reached controlof Tanzania, tried to re-direct there that flow of emigrants. The government gave to the settlers the land which would be touched by the railway. Until 1914, about 3,000 people had arrived in Tanganyika from Germany to settle down. With the WW1, german immigration stopped, and the english one started (the english themselves got the mandate for the territory from the League of Nations). In the Mandate Legislative Council, established in 1926, twelve members were english officials chosen by the governor, while ten members were chosen by and between the white settlers. In 1935 they were 8230 counting both eglish and german settlers, with a population of 5 mil.; Dar-es-Salam, the biggest town of the country at that time, got 700 europeans (mainly germans) on 33,000 inhabitants. From 1945, white people increasingly lose their influence in Tanzania’s politics. From the independence (1961) power went almost completely in the hands of black natives. Tanzania’s citizens of european descent were estimated to be a little less than 17,000 in the early ‘90s, and they were estimated to be 10,000 in 2006.
European people occupies mainly the proximities of mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro. They cultivates tobacco, tea, coffee, cocoa, banana trees, cotton, sugar cane and a few other crops.

[edit] THE VAGINALS
Originally named the Anthony Horgan Septet, when greeted with a sea of blank stares and a complete lack of social validation from their punk rock counterparts, the collective decided to change their name to the slightly more confrontational and perhaps more punk rock name in The Vaginals. Since then the band have never looked back, sharing the stage with such notable bands as The Knockabouts and The Knockabouts and even once boasting distinguished musician Tom Bones as a guest trombonist.
Imagine a bare chested Sublime playing at your sisters 21st, giving mic grabs to an intoxicated Tim Armstrong in the front row, whilst the Reel Big Fish horn section drink your rider, and you’ll almost have an understanding of The Vaginals sound that today’s kids are calling third wave ska.
More serious than your average kooky ska band, and more kooky than your average serious punk band, The Vaginals appeal in perhaps ironically contagious, earning them a colossal following of rent a crowd friends and male groupies.
A brief selection of press quotes: “I lvoe tihs badn!!!!!!” – Jerim (Morewell Conrad of Ska and producer/host of seminal radio program Half Past Ska.”
“Best.Band.Ever.” Chris Bosma. (Former member of influential early 21st century Melbourne Ska Band Eulogy and renowned Internet celebrity.”

[edit] BRIAN J FORD
The work of scientist Brian J Ford ranges through research with light and electron microscopes and with microbes, to inventing an orbiting space microscope for the European Space Agency. Ford, a free-lance university professor and broadcaster, holds a fellowship from the UK's National Endowment for Science, Technology and Art.
A large number of his theories offer society a different vision of reality. He sees microbes as potential allies and not just as enemies of humankind. Ford has been on television regularly, and now is seen presenting novel ideas in topical films. One example is the current documentary 'The man behind the da Vinci Code', another is his contributions to the 'Weird Weapons of WW2' documentaries now being shown on satellite.
Ford was writing a newspaper science column before he was even a student, when such things were rather unheard-of, and has written for The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, and many other newspapers. His articles are also published in Scientific American, New Scientist and others. Ford has his books out in over 100 editions in countries around the world. When he opened his own series 'Science Now' for the BBC it was favourably reviewed by the national press.
A significant amount of present-day popular science began with his inspiration. His book entitled 'The Revealing Lens, Mankind and the Microscope' kicked off the vogue for pop-science books. Ford is a popular lecturer and he voyages around the globe to give his remarkable one-man shows on current scientific issues. He nis hased at Cambridge, United Kingdom.

[edit] Dieudonné de Gozon
Dieudonné de Gozon , born from a noble family in Languedoc, France, was the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes (1346-1353). He carried the nickname of "Extinctor Draconis" which means "The Dragon Slayer" in Latin .
The story goes that there was a dragon in the island of Rhodes, Greece, hiding in the local swamp, and killing the cattle of the local farmers.
Despite the orders of the previous Grand Master to not disturb the beast, Gozon slayed the dragon, and hanged the head on one of the seven gates of the medieval town of Rhodes.
The head was on display until a hundred years ago, when a biologist pointed out it was the skull of a large crocodile.
In 1347 and 1348 the Grand Master proved his gallantry when the Order marched to the help of King Constantine IV of Armenia, threathened by the army of the Sultan of Egypt.

[edit] Florence Nightingale Effect
The Florence Nightingale Effect refers to the situation where a woman falls in love with a man that she is taking care of due to his weakened and vulnerable state. In today's day and age, the vice versa could also happen, where a man falls in love with a sick woman. However, due to the traditional perception that nurses are female, this effect is associated with the former case.
This effect is named after the pioneer nurse, Florence Nightingale. Undocumented cases of this occuring may have taken place during wars such as World War I and World War II. It was made popular in the movie Back to the Future.

[edit] Teddie
Teddie is a brand of the Leavitt Corporation of Everett, MA, USA. The Teddie brand is used for Leavitt's product line of natural peanut butters, made exclusively from roasted peanuts and without preservatives or homogenization. This all-natural process results in a product that tastes markedly different from regular peanut butter. The lack of homogenization and emusifiers allows Teddie peanut butter to easily separate into its constituent oils on top and peanut solids on the bottom.

[edit] blanket party
Term applied to a hazing ritual whereby the victim is held onto a bed by a blanket by the hazers; so immobilized, the victim is hit repeatedly with blunt objects (such as a bar of soap rolled in a towel).

In Film
A blanket party can be seen performed on a Marine Corps recruit (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) in the movie Full Metal Jacket.

[edit] Pierre et Jean
Pierre et Jean, written by Guy de Maupassant, is a naturalistic book written in 1887. Written in narrative form as a novel, it criticizes the genre of psychological study.
The book, very short, almost a novella, was first published and somewhat reviewed in La Noubelle Revue in articles from December 1887 to January 1888. After this, it was edited at the house of Ollendorf.
The novel tells the story of Pierre, a doctor, son of Gerome and Louise Roland (parisian jewelers that have retired to Havre) and Jean, a lawyer and Pierre's brother. Or moreover, it is a story of the jealousy of Pierre for Jean, who has mysteriously inherited the fortune of Léon Maréchal, a recently deceased parisian friend of the Rolands. Throughout the novel, suspicions gather as to the legitimacy of Jean. Is he the hidden son of Maréchal and Madame Roland?
This work is naturalistic, notably through the traits of its characters, the question of legitimacy (legitimate son or bastard,) the middle class, and money problems.

[edit] Redberry mite
The eriophyid mite, Acalitus essigi (Hassan) is a pest of wild and commercially produced blackberries. A. essigi, commonly known as the redberry mite, overwinters within dormant buds of the blackberry plant. The redberry mite is microscopic, requiring at least a 20X hand lens to detect As the season progresses, redberry mite migration occurs up the flower pedicel to colonize leaf axial bracts, the fruit’s calyx area as well as the spaces between berry druplets. Redberry mite feeding prevents berries from ripening uniformly, causing from one to many druplets to remain as a bright red cluster on the otherwise black and fully ripe fruit. Affected druplets never do ripen, causing the entire fruit to be inedible and unmarketable.
