Should artistic competition in the ancient games be mentioned here as well? There were musical and poetic competitions at the Pythian Games and the Panathenaic Games, but not at the Olympics, so I'm not sure if it is relevant...but surely Coubertin knew about the other non-Olympic game? The intro mentions:

Since 1956, the Olympic cultural programme has taken the place of the art competitions.
