[edit] Biography
Arturo Vittori is a founder of the research and design team Architecture and Vision. After studying Fine Arts in Viterbo, he began courses in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Florence (Facoltà di Architettura dell’Università degli studi di Firenze, Italy) where, after a two-year experience at the Darmstadt University of Technology (Technische Universität Darmstadt, Gemany), he graduated in 1998 with an award-winning thesis project entitled “International Space Station - Travelling Network.” After gaining experiences collaborating with architects such as Santiago Calatrava in 2000 and Jean Nouvel in 2001, from 2002 to 2004 he was Manager of Cabin Design at Airbus, in Toulouse (France), taking part in the design of interior cabin design for a variety of airline companies and in particular for the A380, currently the largest airliner existing, delivered to Singapore Airlines in 2007. From 2004 to 2006 he worked with Future Systems, collaborating with Anish Kapoor in the design of the Monte Sant’Angelo subway station in Naples, (Italy), while in 2006 he practiced yacht design at the London-based studio Francis Design.
In 2002 he began collaborating with Swiss architect, Andreas Vogler, with whom he partnered in 2003 to form Architecture and Vision (AV), an international and multidisciplinary team working in architecture and design, engaged in the development of innovative solutions and technology transfer between diverse fields for aerospace and terrestrial applications. Since 2007, Vittori has focused on projects for Architecture and Vision, many of which have received international recognition. In 2006, a prototype of the extreme environment tent, DesertSeal (2004), became part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, after being featured in SAFE: Design Takes on Risk (2005), curated by Paola Antonelli. In the same year, Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry selected Vittori and Vogler as ‘Modern-day Leonardos’ for its Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius exhibition, and they collaborated with Roberto Vittori, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut and brother of Arturo, on the BirdHouse Project. In 2007, a model of the inflatable habitat MoonBaseTwo (2007), developed to allow long-term exploration on the Moon, was acquired for the collection of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, while MarsCruiserOne (2007), the design for a pressurized laboratory rover for human Mars exploration, was shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, as part of the exhibition Airs de Paris.
He has spoken at numerous international conferences on the topics of aerospace architecture, technology transfer and eco-sustainability, and also taught and lead workshops on a variety of related themes. In 2008, he and Vogler will team-teach an undergraduate course in Industrial Design, at the First Faculty of Architecture "Ludovico Quaroni," University of Rome La Sapienza (Prima Facoltà di Architettura “Ludovico Quaroni” dell’Università degli studi di Roma “La Sapienza,” Italy). He is a member of the Order of Architects of Viterbo Province (Ordine degli Architetti della Provincia di Viterbo), and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
