Arthur Stanhope

Arthur Stanhope born 1617, died 1677 son of Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield. He was born at Shelford, the family seat. He was a young man, when the English Civil War started. His three older brothers, were killed or died of wounds during the civil war. After the civil war, he started on the rebuilding of Shelford, which was badly damanged, during the fighting. When he was just a young man he stood for election to Parliament, with his uncle and friend John Hutchinson (Colonel). He won the election with ease. He was a humble man, serving the city of Nottingham with care.
