Arthur Perceval Purey Cust

The Revd Arthur Perceval Purey Cust (1828-1916) was an Anglican priest who served as Dean of York for over 30 years in the 19th and 20th centuries. Born into a distinguished family[1] he was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford [2]and All Souls before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Northchurch, Hertfordshire. Subsequent pastoral appointments in Cheddington, Buckinghamshire and Reading lead to him being appointed an honorary Canon of Christ Church, Oxford; Archdeacon of Buckingham; and, finally,to the Deanery at York [3]. For the next 36 years he meticulously catalogued the Minster’s heritage[4] and died in harness in his 88th year[5]. His portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery [6].
