Arthur Lovekin Prize in Journalism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arthur Lovekin Prize in Journalism is an annual journalism award in Western Australia. Named after journalist and politician Arthur Lovekin, it has been awarded since 1929. It is administered by the University of Western Australia. The winner receives $500 and a medal.
The Prize “…is awarded to the writer of the contribution which, in the opinion of the examiners, is the best contribution of the year by a Western Australian journalist published in an Australian newspaper or periodical produced, published or circulated in Western Australia.”
The prize is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled at UWA and to members of the Western Australian branch of the Australian Journalists' Association section of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance.
Each candidate for the prize can submit three contributions for consideration, but the judges will consider only one of these contributions in making the award. The year is from 1 July to 30 June, but a candidate may submit for consideration a continuing story concerning a connected series of events, provided that the story commences prior to 30 June and is completed not later than 15 July.
The judges are a senior member of the teaching staff in English, Communication and Cultural Studies nominated by the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies at UWA; a representative of the Australian Journalists' Association section of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance, and one other person.
The deadline for 2007 Prize entries was Friday 28 September. The winner was announced at the WA Media Awards, held at Burswood Entertainment Complex on Saturday 10 November.
