Arthur Levitt, Sr.

Arthur Levitt, Sr. (June 28, 1900-May 1980) was the Democratic New York State Comptroller from 1955 to 1978. Levitt was the longest-serving person in that post. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City in 1961. Levitt was the candidate of Tammany Hall in that race, and failed to defeat incumbent Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. who had recently broken with Tammany's leader, Carmine DeSapio.
His son, Arthur Levitt, Jr., was chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission from 1993 to 2001.
