Arthur Hammerstein

Arthur Hammerstein (1872-October 12, 1955), was the uncle of Oscar Hammerstein II, was an opera producer and one of the writers of the song "Because of You," a major hit (#1 for 10 weeks) for Tony Bennett in 1951. Hammerstein wrote the song for the film I Was an American Spy (1951). He was the producer of the musical comedies The Firefly (1912), and Rose Marie (1924), which he did along with his nephew, Oscar Hammerstein II. He also was the producer of the film The Lottery Bride (1930), and made an appearance as himself in an episode of the series Popular Science in 1949. Arthur Hammerstein was born and educated in New York City.
