Arthur J. Carty, O.C., Ph.D., D.Sc., F.R.S.C. (born 1940), is a Canadian academic and the National Science Advisor to the Government of Canada.

Born in Rowlands Gill, County Durham, England, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 and a Ph.D in Inorganic Chemistry in 1965 from the University of Nottingham. In 1965, he joined Memorial University of Newfoundland as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. In 1967, he left for the University of Waterloo. In 1975, he was appointed a full Professor. From 1975 to 1979, he was Director of the Guelph-Waterloo Center for Graduate Work in Chemistry. From 1983 to 1989, he was Chairman of the Department of Chemistry. From 1989 to 1994, he was Dean of Research. In 1994, he was appointed President of the National Research Council of Canada. In 2004, he was appointed he National Science Advisor. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa.

In 2000, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1989, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
