Arsaces is the eponymous Greek form of the dynastic name (rather than the personal names of the kings) adopted by all epigraphically attested rulers of the 'phil-hellenenic' Arsacid dynasties. 'Arsaces'—Aρςακης on their coinage—is a variant form of (likewise hellenized) 'Artaxias' or 'Artaxerxes', in the latter case specifically Artaxerxes II, from whom the Arsacids claimed to descend. The indigenous Parthian and Armenian form was 'Arshak'.
