Arosio, Switzerland

Arosio is a village and former municipality in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland.

It was first recorded in year 1335 as Aroxio.

The village consisted of the amalgamated settlements Terra di sopra and Terra di sotto. The municipality had ca. 300 inhabitants in 1599, which decreased to 274 in 1696, 221 in 1801, 186 in 1900 and 177 in 1960. It then increased somewhat, to 341 in 1990.

In 2005 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Breno, Fescoggia, Mugena and Vezio to form a new and larger municipality Alto Malcantone.
