Arnold (automobile)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arnold was an English automobile manufactured by Arnold Motor Carriage Co. of East Peckham, Kent, from 1896 to 1898. The agricultural engineering firm built twelve cars patterned after the Benz fitted with their own engines; one survives. One arnold was fitted with the world’s first self-starter, where a dynamotor coupled to the flywheel was supposed to assist the car on hills and to start it.

The winner of the first ever London to Brighton race drove an "Arnold" motor car.
