Army Science Board

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Army Science Board (ASB) is a Federal Advisory Committee organized under the Federal Advisory Committee Act. It is the Department of the Army senior scientific advisory body that was chartered in 1977 to replace the Army Scientific Advisory Panel. The ASB advises and makes recommendations to the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology) (ASA(ALT)), the army staff, and major Army commanders on scientific and technological matters of concern to the Army. The Secretary of the Army delegates oversight authority to the ASA(ALT), who functions as the ASB Director.

The ASB is made up of individuals from the private sector, academia, and non-DoD government agencies. Members are selected according to their pre-eminence in their respective fields and appointed to serve renewable three-year terms by the Secretary of the Army. Membership is chosen to ensure that diverse disciplines and points of view are represented. The Secretary of the Army appoints the Chair and the Vice Chair from the ASB membership. The ASB Chair also serves as an ex-officio member of the Defense Science Board. ASB membership is augmented by a small number of consultants who are appointed to one-year terms and who provide specialized input to ASB studies.

The ASB conducts an annual General Membership meeting at selected army installations. Studies are conducted each year after Army leaders contribute requests for study topics they deem of critical importance to the army. These studies are one year in length, highlighted by an August brief-out to the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff, Army and study sponsors.

The stated mission of the ASB is "To provide the Army with independent and unbiased advice on Science and Technology issues that are strategic in nature and important to large segments of the Army."
