Armley Gaol is the former name of a prison in Leeds. It is now referred to as HMP Leeds (see Leeds (HM Prison)). The prison is situated in the Armley region of the city and was built in 1847. The last execution at Armley was in 1961 and was that of Zsiga Pankotia by Harry Allen.
Although no longer officially named Armley Gaol, it is still usually referred locally as such. Armley Gaol was renamed along with all other prisons, for example Strangeways Gaol, became HM Prison Manchester. This was to make their locations more obvious to people unfamiliar with these areas. However in the case of Armley and Strangeways, which are amongst the largest gaols in the country this was probably somewhat futile, as they had both become famous through both their size and notoriety.
