Armenia, Sonsonate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Armenia is a municipality in the Sonsonate department of El Salvador. The current mayor is Carlos Rivera Molina (ARENA). Molina was first elected in 2002, taking the place of Moises Alvarado of the FMLN, and was re-elected to a second term in March 2006.
The name Armenia is derived from the word "arme" in anchient mayan dialekt of nawatt and means "the place of pompous turkeys". When the first spanish settlers were passing by on the road to Tazumal they have encountered many native indians whom they requested to show them any birds or animals to be consumed. Nawatts pointed at the nearby dormant volcano and described a black and red feathered bird later known as turkey. Hence the name.
