Arm Wrestling (Japanese: アーム・レスリング Aamu Resuringu) is a 1985 arcade game by Nintendo and a spin-off of the Punch-Out!! series. Since it was created by the same development team who made the Punch-Out!! series, Arm Wrestling features many of the same features such as a dual monitor system and quirky computer opponents.

The goal of the game is to become the World Arm Wrestling Champion by defeating as many opponents in arm-wrestling as possible. In order to achieve this title the player must compete against five different computer opponents and pin them in a timed match. A match begins when the player taps left on the joystick. During the match the player must attack the computer by pressing right on the joystick and tapping the button to increase the power of the attack. If the computer makes a strange face it means they are about to counterattack. In order to win a match the player must move the joystick back and forth and surprise the computer before they have a chance to counterattack. After Kabuki is defeated, players will play a bonus game. The bonus game requires players to catch a sack of money for extra points by pressing a button right when the bag is near the protagonist's head. After the player beats the fifth and final opponent the game begins again with increased difficulty.

[edit] Opponents

The opponents from Arm Wrestling in order of appearance and difficulty:

  1. Texas Mac: The first opponent in the game. He is a cowboy who is the easiest for players to win against, for the very first match at least.
  2. Kabuki: This opponent reacts more quickly than Texas Mac, and it's hard to push him over as easily. His appearance is similar to E. Honda of the Street Fighter series, though likely by coincidence.
  3. Mask X: A luchador-like arm wrestler who cheats by doing head butts. To beat Mask X, the player must move Mask X's arm nearly down, dodge one of Mask X's head butts and pull his mask off when someone shouts "Pull". When his mask is removed, it is revealed that Mask X is actually Bald Bull, one of the opponents from the Punch-Out!! series.
  4. Alice & Ape-III: Ape-III is a mechanical monkey and Alice is a girl who controls it. Once Ape's near losing, Alice will make him spring his arm out to the right and bring a magnet on the right hand side to make his arm move toward where he is pulling his opponent's arm at to try to win. When the magnet appears, players must grab the magnet to make the protagonist point it toward Ape-III's face to make him break apart.
  5. Frank Junior: This opponent is based on the Frankenstein monster. He cheats by firing flame from his mouth to his opponents sometimes when he tells his opponent to "Wait". If the player refuses to wait, then Frank Jr. will automatically pin his opponent back,

and the player must need to counterattack just to avoid losing. Players not only need to obey Frank Jr., but they also need to watch which way his eyes shift. If they shift left, he will blow fire at his opponent. Players should wait until he pulls his hand down and move the protagonist's head left to avoid the stream. If Frank Jr.'s eyes go right, players must wait for his left hand to go down and then start hitting the right button, and then press down to make it act as a regular power-up.
