Talk:Arkona, Ontario
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm making an assumption that the source of the supposition regarding a previously unknown "massive earthquake" allegedly occurring at the site of present day Arkona Ontario 10,000 years ago, which purportedly produced large scale local geological alteration, relates somehow to information which was presented to the Warwick Township History Committee at a pair of meetings last year.

I am not aware of any mainstream scientific evidence [published or unpublished] supporting that this alleged seismic event actually even occurred. To the best of my knowledge the landforms now present at Arkona are exclusively the result of the effects of the last glaciation period and subsequent non catastrophic erosion processes over the past 10,000 years.
This earthquake 'theory' now appears to have even been put forward on a site dealing with Arkona local history:

Once again, without any substantiating evidence, despite some fairly startling claims, for example a one time earthquake related height change in the local bedrock of "8o meters" [sic]!
I would be more than happy to retract everything I have mentioned here if responsible evidence of these claims is presented. Until then, I'm afraid my opinion is that everyone concerned are the victim of a deliberate, perhaps humourous hoax, or a gross misunderstanding of someones offhand comments.
