[edit] Comment on oyster beds
I had always heard the story of the oyster beds dying out due to mining pollution. However, "Reflections in Bulloughs Pond" by Diana Muir reports on a similar phenomenon in New England around the same time, which she attributes to sewage (introduction of running water rapidly increased household water usage, thus creating the need to dispose of that same water, cesspits no longer being sufficient- hence fecal matter which previously was accumulated and disposed of on land was discharged on masse into the waterways.)
