Arkansas State Treasurer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arkansas State Treasurer acts as the head banker for the State of Arkansas, handling deposits, withdrawals, redemptions of state warrants, and investments of state funds. The position was created in 1819 when Arkansas became a territory. When Arkansas became a state in 1836, its constitution established the Office of the Treasurer of State, a position that would be elected by the legislature.

The current Arkansas State Treasurer is Martha Shoffner. She began serving her four-year term at the beginning of 2007. Treasurer Shoffner was raised in the small Jackson County town of Weldon. Born to a farmer and a school teacher, Treasurer Shoffner graduated from Newport High School. After graduation, she attended Memphis State and Arkansas State University. Shortly thereafter, she started work with Cranford Johnson Advertising as an account representative. Shoffner, a licensed real estate agent, was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in 1996. After being term limited, Shoffner was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic Nomination for the State Auditors office. In 2005, Shoffner announced her candidacy for State Treasurer on the steps of the Jackson County Courthouse. After being outspent almost 3 to 1 Shoffner won more votes than any other candidate on election night 2006.
