Potential adoptee

I would appreciate mentoring: I jumped feet-first into copyediting (which I do know, as well as writing good schtik) and have gotten "lost" quite a few times. In addition to help coping with WP I would also appreciate an editor to review my copyedits, to point out mistakes and stylistic oversights until I can see them for myself and learn to auto-correct {pun intended}. Please adopt me. Thank you, Shir-El too 23:51, 16 September 2007 (UTC) PS Like your graphics, too ;-}

I have replied on your talk page Shirel. ArielGold 04:55, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for sharing the late-night patrol with me! I see you around a lot, doing some of the various cleanup tasks and such. Wikipedia needs more editors to stand the midnight vigil! GlassCobra 05:57, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks GC! I'm a night owl, for sure, lol. I'm working on another task right now, but if the disruptive edits rise feel free to holler at me and I'll jump into actions! ArielGold 05:59, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Will do, thanks! GlassCobra 06:07, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry that I was unclear, I should have placed my comment differently. My POV comment was directed at the annonymous editor that spoke how CH had "saved his life". I'm really glad that other people have joined in to help ensure a non-biased article. Thank you very much for your work, and for having more patience than me to clearly explain policy. I hope my mis-type hasn't dissuaded you, and again, thank you for your work. Absentis 16:28, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh no worries at all, I was 99% sure you weren't talking to me, lol. But I did want to be sure, just for my own peace of mind. I have reviewed much of the talk page discussions, and it always seemed that you were consistent with citing policies and guidelines to that anon editor, so I was pretty sure you directed that towards him. Thank you very much for clearing it up, and I'm glad to see that the editor has gone from simply reverting and/or adding unsourced material, to actually discussing things, that's a step in the right direction, and the article is much more neutral now. Thanks for keeping up to date on it! ArielGold 16:31, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
That editor just doesn't give up, does he? At least the article is semi-protected now, which is a relief. I thought I'd drop by and says thanks for your work today, and especially for signing all the unsigned comments. Absentis 00:09, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
No problem, and I appreciate all your continued work with explaining policy and guidelines. I have asked a Bureaucrat to look into this issue, given the recent anon edit that states he is the subject, requesting deletion. I'll keep you apprised of any developments. Thank you!

I copied your message so as not to miss any of the points.

  • Yes, Shakespeare and Grumpy Old Men, have made sure 'Ariel' is a popular feminine name; you probably know that it is also the name of one of the four Archangels.
Don't forget The Little Mermaid!
  • Initially I need someone to help me mind my P's and Q's in the edits. True, the subject I chose requires really expert handling, but I would like to see it expanded and verified because it may contain kernels of information that - if true - will materially change the perceived role of British Intelligence in WWII. Yes, I'm a history and espionage buff.
I can respect that, I just won't be able to help with any possible neutrality issues or other items. But general spelling/grammar and how to properly place footnotes I'm more than willing to assist with!
  • >some spelling errors and grammatical errors (most notably the word "it's" ... Well - I've been away from the States for a long time and am totally unaware of the slang and conventions [I originally thought that 'lucked out' meant 'ran out of luck'] that have evolved in the meantime. Familiarity with Hebrew or Israeli culture is non-essential. BTW: is the name Hebrew being substituted for Jew/Jewish today? That's VERY interesting, because up to the mid-19th century in the US Jews were referred to as Israelites; Jew was pejorative.
It's and Its are not slang, nor are they American terms. You can see the usage here. I will admit, they are often mis-used, but not too hard to figure out. If you can substitute "it is", or "it has" for the word, then use the apostrophe. If "it is" makes no sense, leave it out. As far as "Hebrew" vs. "Jewish" I honestly don't know, lol. That is most probably simply my unfamiliarity with the proper terms associated with it, so rather than mis-speak I just chose the most broad terms.
  • Yes, I did liberally put egg on my face with Woman labeled.jpg. I have no personal problem with nudity; I mistakenly thought WP would have a no-nudity policy for the benefit of minors.
Yes, common misconception, no worries!
  • ...to prompt you when entering a blank edit summary... done.
That'll come in handy for you as well as others, excellent.
  • Thank you for the table of links; in a subpage would be wonderful, as I don't know how to yet. I'm none technical/academic and basically want to trot before learning how to walk through WP, but my time is not my own and I'm trying to do as much as possible as fast as possible, plus I'm a quick 'hands-on' study.
Y Done You can find it at User:Shir-El too/Links.

I'm taking your suggestion seriously and will look for a mentor sharing more of my interests; in the meanwhile, may I ask for your opinion/advice from time to time? That would be very helpful. Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness, Shir-El too 14:17, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Of course, just drop me a line anytime, and also, I have my adoption page set up at User:ArielGold/Adoption, so feel free to go there and browse, and read the talk page, as well as join in!

OH MY! I just started reading your page. We have more in common than I thought: I've been taking care of my husband [hands-on physical care] for the past 5 years; he's been on dialysis for over 3, and we have a live-in foreign worker with us for the last 3, thank God! Well! Take Care and have a Good Day/Night/whatever, Shir-El too 14:17, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh my, peritoneal dialysis, I'd guess, since you take care of him at home? That's not so bad as what I specialized in, (ICU/CCU hemodialysis), but still quite a difficult situation. My heart goes out to you. I have taken the liberty of editing your userpage, to remove the leading spaces, they cause that odd "nonformat" box, (that's used for programming command examples when Wiki-Markup won't render them correctly mostly), and indented. Instead of tabbing, or using a leading space, you can place a colon to indent ( : ) which provides the same thing. Two colons indents another tab, etc., also, I placed a link to the subpage with your links on the userpage for your convenience. Holler with any other questions, and keep an eye on the Adoption page, as I'll be putting things up there as well.ArielGold 14:53, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
No: hemodialysis, 3 times a week, four hours ea. Got to run, will check back later. Shir-El too 15:19, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, well that's what I did for years, just on the other side of the machine, in ICUs, lol. That's not easy at all, for either of you. My sympathies. Have fun running errands, I have some to do today as well, ugh, lol ArielGold 15:23, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

User:Muraad kahn

User:Muraad kahn and User:71.107.72.205 looks like the same person, as their edits to Bangladesh War Of Independence 1971 and Bangladesh Liberation War are very similar. If you intend to monitor the recent bout of destructive editing to the later article, you may also wish to check this fact. Sorry to bother you, but I thought I should do this. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:38, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

You're not wrong, and I suspected the same thing as well. Let me go see where the issue is regarding that, thank you! ArielGold 14:40, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for telling me that I was of some help. And, thanks to the community for putting a temporary stop to this madness. This is my first encounter with an active vandal, and the experience was most instructional. Wow! Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:01, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Let me digest the essay a bit first, before I can make a comment. Thanks. And, oh, since you've been thinking about etiquettes, how was my response to the incident? I'm still mighty prone to get angry at, should I say, dumbheadedness (I actually got better words to describe the phenomenon, though). Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, if you'd truly like my constructive criticism, I'd suggest that you take some time after things like this, to avoid typing "under the influence of emotion", so to speak, lol. I did notice your note following the block, and you'll see how the editor reacted to that. What I'd suggest is that you avoid using terms like "Vandalizing" (technically, what this editor did was not vandalism, it was just unconstructive editing), you'd instead it would probably be best to just cite specific policies and/or guidelines, link to the discussion that resulted in consensus to redirect, explain what happens when two articles of the same subject exist, WP:FORK, WP:NPOV, and explain the core policies again. Also, I'd avoid saying things like "And, if you think it's game that you can keep doing destructive edits and get away with it, you're even more wrong.", or "you're ruining the article", because those come across as a challenge, and probably aren't going to be received well. I again, realize fully your frustration, and I sympathize with you, truly I do, but I also realize the value of taking that time to gather your thoughts, before hitting the reply button. I have posted a reply to the editor, and I truly hope that it will help them understand things a bit better. I honestly have no knowledge of the subject, so unfortunately I cannot really explain the issue in detail to the editor, but hopefully what I've added will be of use. And again, please don't take my review of your note as negative, but simply as an experience to learn from, we all have them. ArielGold 15:47, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello again!

Hi Ariel, you know so much about Wikipedia and gave such good, detailed comments to that user trying to get adminship, I hope you can answer my question. When I go to my preferences, there is a part which tells me "number of edits", it sits at 4825 as of now, yet I use the wannabe_kate tool and it says I have total of 4528. First I thought it was because of deleted edits, but then I use [[1]] which tells me I have 16 deleted edits. So I'm not quite sure where the discrepancy comes from, would you know?

Also, re: deleted edits, are those edits to articles/talks/any pages that have been deleted? So if I contributed 10 edits to one page, and that page was deleted then those edits count as deleted edits?

Thanks for your help! Phgao 17:14, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Phgao! I've noticed a discrepancy between Kate's and other tools as well, such as this one. I have never seen that Wikimedia counter, I'm comparing mine to it now. It says I have 10,327 edits, and Kate's says I have 11,599 so I'd be willing to bet that your original hunch is right: Kate's doesn't count those items that have been deleted, whether they are on an article that's deleted, talk page, etc. (And yes, I think if you made 10 edits to a page, and that page was later deleted, those 10 edits would be subtracted.) But, I do not know which one to believe, honestly. The Wikimedia one says I've only uploaded 10 images, but I know I've uploaded much more. Perhaps that is not counting Commons, I'm not sure. It is interesting that shows 312 deleted edits for me, but that's still lower than Kate's, adding up to only 10,639, but it says right on there: "The total edit count does not include deleted edits.". So honestly, I don't have an answer, lol. (Is that the longest "I'm clueless" answer in history? I really only pay attention to edit count except just to see general distribution of edits, unique pages, etc, and I don't think it is a reflection of an editor. However, it is an interesting item, have you asked at Village pump? I'd be interested in knowing the answer, if you decide to ask there, let me know and I'll keep an eye on it. And it is very nice to meet you! I have seen you many many times, but have not had the chance to meet you, so I'm honored (~*curtsy*~) ArielGold 18:04, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Just to butt in, the counter on your preferences screen includes deleted edits, because it uses some internal MediaWiki counter. The WannabeKate tool counts your contribution history, which does not include the deleted contribs. I just found this out last week! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:09, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Feel free to butt in any time Flyguy! (And Hi! ) I always love seeing your name on my talk page. And yeah, that's what I suspected, but I hadn't found any confirmation, but it definitely makes sense. Still funny how all three of these counters give pretty wide margins of difference. Quite interesting. ArielGold 18:11, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I've never seen that third tool. It rips me off many of my valuable contributions!! Edit counting is bad. Let's just stop here. ;) -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:15, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah I don't pay attention to the total number, except for maybe milestones just for fun, but I mean, okay have you looked at my Kate's? It is hilarious, lol. I have ~*cough*~ over 1000 edits to my own userspace. Okay, there is a valid reason for that, one: I have a "bookmarks" page with all the relevant policies/guidelines, info on Wikipedia, and I update it quite often, adding links, but also, I have a "cheatsheet" that I use every hour nearly, that has everything from my custom notices, to quick links, to my happy faces, lol. So I'm updating that nearly daily. Plus, all the edits I've done to my various notice templates, my custom tiny header boxes I use, User:ArielGold/Top, etc., so yeah it is a laugh looking at my edit count, you can probably slice out 2000 edits that are really not relevant, lol. Plus, I freely admit, I'm Type A, so if I even see a comma out of place in an edit I've made, I'm going to go back and fix it, or it will drive me buggy, So, edit counting is bad, but evaluation of your personal scope of editing based on Kate's tool is a very useful thing, one I find invaluable. ArielGold 18:25, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree about WBKate. I like the way it breaks everything down and provides links to the articles as necessary. As for user-space edits.... well some people always like to criticize. I just did an editor review on User:Spebi and he had gotten minorly hammered over his userspace edits in previous reviews. I mean if it's all you do, that's one thing, but like you said, there are valid reasons for using userspace. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:32, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Completely depends on the reason. For example, I'd be willing to bet both Phae and The Transhumanist have pretty high userspace counts, because they create and design pages for others, and thus, they've got a lot of templates, sub pages, projects, etc. This is valid and reasonable in my opinion. Now, with me, my reasons are practical: My memory bites, so I have to have these cheatsheets and bookmarks pages or I'd never remember where all the things I want are if I don't use them every day. But yep, I agree they can be held against you. I freely say that Hey, I edit userspace a ton, lol. It isn't a crime, I've created two people's userpages and so, yeah I had a lot of edits working those over with them. Plus my own, plus a variety of other things, like reverting vandalism on userpages, etc.. Still, ultimately, it doesn't reflect on me as an editor except that it says I am not 100% accurate at coding the first time around (or the second... or the third, lol). ArielGold 18:37, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Butting in, too :-) If you want to get rid of all those userspace edits in your edit count, just copy the page's code, ask an admin to delete the page, and post the code once again. Don't ask how I know that ;-) But, that shouldn't matter, anyway. You should be able to edit your user space as much as you want and not get judged because of it. --Agüeybaná 19:59, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Squid Guy is more than welcome to "butt in" with pleasure! I honestly never thought of doing that, and I think that I'd probably not, simply because I really like seeing the various permutations my userpage has gone through, lol. Plus, if someone thinks it is bad that my coding skills bite and it takes me several edits to get things they way I like them, well... that's their right, and I wouldn't fault them for it. Hee hee. Thank goodness I have awesome folks who do know code to go to for help when I'm stumped, that's all I can say! ArielGold 22:31, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Indeed I am too glad to know such a upstanding wikipedian! ( *bows back* ) Boy have I found a nice quote from The Bard himself, He draweth out the thread of his verbosity finer than the staple of his argument. Verbosity in general from politicians is frowned upon, however elaboration as you rightly do, is another thing.

The Wikimedia one gets its info from another copy of Wikipedia and thus I think lags behind other tools. The one in preferences includes absolutely everything you have done, so every time you click save, bang, another count, so page moves and deletions/deleted contributions as you rightly said. I did have a look at Village Pump and came across this conversation. Edit Count in Preferences. But I do agree that the distribution of edits is more important, as someone who writes a lot of articles as compared with someone who fights vandalism and warns would have a completely different distribution. Phgao 04:23, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, exactly. Or someone who is overly verbose, like me, and has tons of talk page comments . I think I still like Kate's, just because it lets me see where and how I've been editing lately, and that's helpful to me. And, okay I'm going to admit my ignorance, lol... but honestly I had no idea that "my preferences" had your edit count! It didn't really sink in in the original question, because I only noticed that just now reading your reply. I'm old, so you can cut me some senility slack, ArielGold 06:18, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I saw your comment here, where you were neutral because of "no Wikipedia talk participation". Just so you know, my participation in that area is not so good, either. I don't think that should be a factor in determining if someone is ready for adminship. --Agüeybaná 23:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

That is true, however, you have a great many talk page comments to make up for it, to show editors how you interact with other editors. This editor in question had only about 450 total talk page edits, across all wp, and the majority of those were from vandal fighting, so there was really no way to judge how this editor interacted with others during times of conflict. Now, you on the other hand, have nearly 3000 total talk page edits. You're right, though, I should have clarified my comment and not focused on that one area. Thanks my dear Squid Guy! ArielGold 23:37, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I like to talk a lot :-) --Agüeybaná 00:40, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Seattle reign vs. Seattle Reign

Sorry to have screwed up the protocol for moving/renaming the misnamed (l.c.) "Seattle reign" page. That was a page newly added (by me), so I didn't think it was a big deal. I won't make that particular mistake again, though I'm sure I'll make others. Thanks for tidying up after me!

I wasn't quite able to get the team logo .gif file to show up on the "Seatle Reign" page, though I tried. Maybe you or someone could fix this?Patzer42 10:22, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a peek at it, and I'm not worried you'll forget to move pages again, I realize how confusing things can be sometimes, so no worries! ArielGold 10:22, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, kudos go to Pmanderson for calling my attention to that. I had formatted my sig with IPA characters, but they pose a problem on most browsers. — [ aldebaer] 10:09, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, I just figured it was a foreign language of some kind, some of those don't render for me either, lol. I like this sig! ArielGold 10:13, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I decided to keep the formatting even without IPA chars because I liked it too. — [ aldebaer] 10:30, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm looking at your sig code, and wondering if you wanted a space between al and debaer, because it seems like there's a space, but it is hidden in the code. Or was that intended? What do you think of this:

— Al deBaer

Or, if you tell me your favorite colors, and if you didn't want that space there, I could make a sig for you that links to your userpage, contribs, and talk page for ease of use. If you want, that is. ArielGold 10:47, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

This is very kind of you. However, actually, I prefer my current short and simple signature because long sig markup clutters up talk pages. All the necessary links are there on top of my talk page, so I wouldn't really include them in the sig. I did include the "hidden" markup <!-- --> as breaking spaces and for the convenience of myself or someone else looking for my username in the markup of a talk page: Type in "alde", and it will yield only one hit per instance of sig because "al<!-- -->debaer" doesn't match the search string "alde". — [ aldebaer] 17:14, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
No problem, and I completely understand. And I'll just smile and nod and pretend I understand the reason for the hidden thingie (when I don't, hee hee) I'm not sure what's being accomplished with that, but if you know, that's all that matters! lol. ~*Hugs*~ ArielGold 18:30, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment on Melbourne Press Club! If you have time would you mind reviewing Leuk the Duck as well? Thanks again! Phgao 14:13, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

It is gone, lol. Sorry. ArielGold 14:21, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Lolz! Yes that admin was quick! Sometimes fast efficiency is good, other times questionable. But I've submitted my comments to them and asked for a review. I'll see how that goes. User_talk:Natalie_Erin#Deletion_of_Leuk_the_Duck Phgao 14:27, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh well, how does the saying go, win some, lose some? Phgao 14:37, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I'd maybe suggest making articles on a subpage of your userspace until you're sure they wouldn't get deleted, you can add refs, clean them up, and do all the little tweaks there, and then use the 'move page' tab to move to mainspace. Might help, anyway. Just a thought. The Melbourne one is up for AfD, so I guess you can just see how that goes. I looked for some refs, but wasn't able to find any. Sorry. ArielGold 14:39, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks so much for adding those references!!!! I actually removed the PROD tag, um I'm not sure, but I don't think it is up for AFD, or is there a difference between AFD and PROD? As when I visited PROD page, it said anyone could remove the tag, so I did. And then it also said, if anyone objected, they could then also send it to AFD. Phgao 14:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
And re: The duck, yes I decided to let that pass, as well I couldn't find that many (read:none), references either, although it is mentioned a few times in written articles and publications in Melbourne, where I'm from. Phgao 14:58, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it is hard when something seems to be important, from where you live, but in the end, it has to be considered globally, and finding references on local things can be really difficult. I can relate, hee hee. Okay I changed the references to be {{reflist}} because the old template is probably going to be merged into this new one, so it is good to use the newer style, and I made it a 2 column reflist. I've moved External links to the end, per WP:MOS and I finished tweaking the text, I'm done messing with it now, lol. ArielGold 15:05, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I would not have been able to do any of that without your imput and your editing is supurb. Arrrhh, there's so much to do, so little time. Phgao 15:16, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

RfA

Thanks. I'm so glad that week is over. I was warned when nominated that the process would be stressful. Ha! I had no clue. I'll be sure to remember when I participate in RfAs how scrutinized the person in the hot seat feels. :) --Moonriddengirl 17:02, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I am just so sorry I honestly didn't see you were nominated, or I hope you know I'd have offered one of my "Ariel Verbose Responses" on your behalf. I am so proud of you for getting through it, I just took a look at the closed nom, and wow, lol. I'm confident you will put all doubts to rest with your careful consideration and patience. And, now I have someone new to bug! ArielGold 17:09, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
:D Bug away. I'm currently learning to navigate through the speedy deletion process. It's slow going, since I'm still so unfamiliar with the controls. --Moonriddengirl 17:13, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Of course, you wouldn't need to bug anyone if... ;)  — Timotab Timothy (not Tim dagnabbit!) 17:15, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

New sub-section for Shir-El because Ariel is lazy and hates to scroll

Thank you; hyper-tension, Parkinson's, COPD, OSA, ostio-arthritis, grout and prostate all lined up before the CRF kicked in, plus capilary fragiligy, and a clepsiella UTI joined the fun a year ago! Maybe someday we'll swap notes, but not today. I see you are VERY BUSY and in high demand, so I'll keep it short. * Thank you for the design offer, I will take advantage of it when I feel I've earned it. * Lol also stands for 'lots of love.' * Do you think a treatment notes document would be of use for none-medical lay-wo/men like me? Like 'tabbing' the ends of Micropore not only to find it, but to make it easier to pull off the patient's skin later? etc. * What do a woman and a tea-bag have in common? You don't know how strong they are until you put them in hot water... LoL, Shir-El too 15:22, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Oy! My goodness, you've got your work cut out for you, my dear. As for feeling like you can't come here, no worries at all, I'm never too busy. I honestly do not think that a "treatment notes" article is really needed, mainly because there are so many articles already present that touch on the medicine side of things, and list-type articles are generally discouraged. It might be seen as overlap of other areas. I'll try to poke around and see if there's something out there similar, though. But yes, tabbing micropore is a must, lol. Feel free to come here absolutely any time, and visit the Adoption page whenever you want to, I'm more than willing to help, and can maybe set up some structured things if you tell me what area of Wikipedia you'd like to learn about. I'm glad to see you today! Have a just absolutely wonderful, sunny day, Shir-El! ArielGold 15:27, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Found your message 'at home'. You are obviously such an all-around WP maven, I could do far worse than be mentored by you. Especially as I may be in-and-out of scraps the first few months I'm here and would definately want you in my corner! "Yes, please adopt me!" You also get a LOT of thanks, so I'll have to dream up some way to put whipped cream on it (low-fat, of course). * Some things you should know about me before you finally decide. I'm a none technical/academic autodidact with four years total formal education and a catholic taste in reading; I've never been to a chat-room or surfed, and until recently our computer was almost limited to e-mails; I joined WV first to learn Spanish and then became involved with the Apptitude Test project; I came here to contribute in the only way I thought possible, helping copy edit; I don't speed-read and do not take kindly to 'hitting the books' but will do so as a means to an end, and have already begun taking the lesson(s) you left because I am awed by the conception and scope of the WM and want to further them to the best of my abilities - fully aware that the process will help my own growth. [Yes: run-on sentence.] * "Treatment notes", or “tips”, is not meant to be directly medical but to pass-on to others in the same boat the things we learned the hard way, maybe for Wellspouce or other caregiver organizations. Things like Hyd. Peroxide, T-shirt bandages, glove liners, etc. I doubt it would over-lap anywhere; if you know of a site that has this kind of tips, please tell me. *BTW, lol stood for 'laugh out loud' originally. * Enough! I've got a long night and day ahead of me. 'Talk' to you soon, Shir-El too 23:59, 18 September 2007 (UTC) PS What's your opinion re: Lantana camara? Should I leave it on the talk page or move it over as suggested? Thank you.
Replied on your talk page, so you can get used to seeing the yellow "You've got new messages" banner at the top! Hee hee ArielGold 08:14, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Your ideas for my page are nice, but I'm not quite ready for it; may I have my own page back, please? Also, I need time to a) read and b) absorb all the info comming at me. Because I don't have a background in research, or computers, or the Internet, I have to do it myself to learn how, so your suggestions are an excellent starting point. ("I did it my way"). BTW, one of the references already in the Lantana article mentions they were ornamental plantings in Austrialia, so I'll use that to begin with, then expand. When I've got everything lined up I'll ask you how to add the references. I need time to catch my breath in this WikiUniverse. Thank you, Shir-El too 04:05, 20 September 2007 (UTC) Note: this might interest you http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,2162394,00.html PS What does ":P" stand for? Also ":D"? Tks
A ":P" is an emoticon of someone smiling while sticking their tongue out. A ":D" is an emoticon for someone giving a Very Big Grin (sometimes this is also said as: *vbg*). --MikeVitale 04:32, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh DEAR! I see I'm too late: you did all the homework for me, so the Lantana article is a bust. Pity. Shir-El too 05:00, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

The Lantana article isn't a "bust", I'm not sure why you say that, it isn't going to be deleted, and it is looking nice. I thought you were asking for help with finding and adding references, if I misunderstood, I'm sorry. ArielGold 09:06, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

The reasons are fully explained in the decline comments, and in case you did not see them, you can review notability, verifiability, reliable sources, and what Wikipedia is not. Hey

Mind if I borrow some of that fancy coding you have for you navbar and talk page and stuff? --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (Talk|Contribs) —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 08:26, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Of course not, dear! Nick all you want, lol. And ask if you have any questions, because chances are, the coding isn't perfect, I just play around with it until it "looks" how I want (to me, lol) and it may not really be right, so holler if you have any problems, or if you want some cool pictures for your own navbar, I have a whole huge gallery bookmarked, hee hee. ArielGold 08:33, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Fiddling around till it looks right is how I do things too, but I'm lazy so I like a place to start. Course I'm gonna have to man up the colors a bit. Right now I'm writing up an "edit milestone" section, so I'll get to it in a little bit. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (Talk|Contribs) 08:44, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
"Man up the colors" Also, feel free to use User:ArielGold/Toolbox if you want. ArielGold 08:50, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

lol indeed, hope you don't mind me butting in, but the User:ArielGold/Toolbox may be good, but this is godly. Phgao 10:38, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

LOL Thanks Phgao, yep I add to that almost every few days, always more interesting pages to put up there, which is why I have it on my navigation bar for anyone to use! I'm glad you find it helpful! ArielGold 10:41, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Well I took your navbar and made it really really minimal, but that's the kinda guy I am. Which basically means it's useless. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (Talk|Contribs) 11:44, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I saw, and I really like it! I don't mind minimalism, and I appreciate it. Have you seen WP:KIS? ArielGold 11:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Naw I hadn't seen that before. Thanks again. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (Talk|Contribs) 11:53, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I did my talk page, again very minimal, the the code was cut down a lot. Also borrowed the code from your title, but I did my own thing with it. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (Talk|Contribs) 13:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Navbar

Hey, I'm just refurbishing my User Page and I was wondering how to create the navbar you have and how to add the links to it, any help woyld be greatly appreciated! Cheers! (Murchy 11:39, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

I'd be happy to make you one if you like, if you can tell me your color preferences, and what links you'd like on it, it would be no problem at all. And lol do you want me to fix your userpage a bit so it is more customized for you, and not really a copy? Like, favorite colors, your own icons, pictures, etc? ArielGold 11:42, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

OH! You are an absolute god send!! Praise the lord! That would be great thanks. My colour preferences would primarliy blue, green, red and yellow. I like all the icons you have on your Navbar and bokes except the hearts on the userboxes box (the hearts are a little fruity for me :P) And i had trouble getting the borders to fit the picture (as you could probably see)

If you could incoporate the images into my page aswell that would be excellent.

  • Hollywood Sign2.jpg
  • East LA Basin from Mulholland Drive.jpg
  • Auckland - Skyline.jpg
  • Flag of the United States.svg
  • Flag of New Zealand.svg

(theyre already uploaded)

Thanks a bunch for your help, its people like you who make wikipdia special :D

-Um, yeah i like the tab format and all the icons except for the flower (i am a guy by the way :D) and a gallery would be excellent, i tried it once a while ago and it was successful but i wasn't happy with it (I'm sure you can do a better job) but i like the direction you took your page in, so i guess thats the base for mine aswell. Thanks a bunch (Murchy 12:05, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

Haha! Yes i've stopped editing so go right ahead, it was hard sifting through trying to remove all the 'Ariel' references, talk page link, user boxes, awards (i did have about 4 but i accidently deleted them during editing) E-mail is enabled (i'm relatively sure) bookmarks and globetrotting (i travel a lot) would be excellent. Thanks (Murchy 12:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

- Thanks a bunch.

P.S. How do i get my comments to invert from the left of the page so it doesnt look like 1 continuous comment?? (Murchy 12:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

The secret to indenting: Colons! Use one Colon (this line uses one) .
Use two colons.
Use three colons.

Edit the page to see how it works. Also as you know, the asterisk makes the bullet, but there are more ways to make lists as well, here's the page that shows most of them: WP:LIST. ArielGold 12:50, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh! ok, thanks, now i know. Um no, the Helen Clark, GWB photo was from wikipedia but it was removed so i sourced it and found the copyright was on wikipedia already, but when uploading it I accidentally put an extra '.jpg' on the end lol. No, i didnt take the stealth plane picture,i cant actually remember where i got it, but just on the news tonight, they annouced they were scrapping the porotypes from the airforces. What a coincidence. I had the Jenny Shipley one from ages ago and thought i'd put it to good use on wikipedia, although i didnt like it in my article so i took it down. :D (Murchy 13:15, 19 September 2007 (UTC))
WOW! I mean..... WOW! I am just blown away by the quality of your work! It is absolutely amazing, better than what I expected, much, much better! I wish there was some way to repay you, except that I live in New Zealand and you live in America? Anyway, the page looks amazing, just fantastic, the icons are perfect, great colour scheme. Thanks SO much for all your hard work even though im a total stranger, and by the way, i forgot to answer your question before, no im not an aviator, im a student actually, but im interstic in a broad range of subjects :D. And thanks for the advice on the copyright sitch, ill get on about finding the sources where i obtained the image. Cheers! (Murchy 13:43, 19 September 2007 (UTC))
LOL No thanks needed, it was my pleasure. Look over the other boxes/navbars and let me know what you like best, and we'll make your navbar from there. ArielGold 13:44, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
I have found the federal gov. source, it was actually from the White House website, so all i need to know is where to update the copyright status. And everything on the page look great, about the navbar, i like the layour of your, and the links seem relevan to mine, but im not actually sure what archives actually are, could you elaborate for me please? Thanks. (Murchy 13:50, 19 September 2007 (UTC))
I just updated the file to add the source I located it at, i took a look at the archiving page and, for want of a cliche, its all french to me (even though I speak french) so if you could help set up a bot to archive my files, that would be "magnifique"! (Murchy 14:09, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

I have just set my Prefernces for e-mail, so thats all a go-go and i created a sinature (♠Murchy♠) i dont know why, but i did. lol (♠Murchy♠ 14:17, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

I know, i saw the page and the wonderful progress you have made, im stunned! Youre a lifesaver, the true meaning of WikiFairy :D! (♠Murchy♠ 14:27, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

Um, if you could remove from main page so it can look clean and link them to the Navbar for me, that would be superduper!:P lol, havent said that in a while.... Thanks for all your help with well.... everything! :P I dont think theres anything else i want done to it. Oh, wait. On your apge you have a picture of the Endevour liftoff, do you remember the photo of the US Bank Tower i had on mi monstrosity of a page before? Do you think you could put that up and explain to me who to change the photo, i want to feature a different skyscraper eachweek so could you name it like Worlds Tallest Towers or something of that nature? In the same place you have yours? (If its no too much trouble - I've commanderred you services a lot lately!) Thanks (♠Murchy♠) 15:13, 19 September 2007 (UTC))

Wow, lol. Coming from you that is high praise indeed. I really appreciate you watching my back on this issue, as it had really gotten out of hand prior to Mr. Linden entering the discussion. Gladly, the dissenters and the ardent supporters seem to have respected the process and have not interfered. Absentis is helping greatly as well, and I hope to soon have a much more neutral, factual article (albeit a much shorter one, lol) than a few weeks ago. Thanks, Bards poem thing

That was the only site I found that had the exact format, and the translation name in parenthesis exactly as the submission did, but I agree that it is probably found any number of other sites exactly as worded. However, I reverted my closing because I need to look into the issues of posting poems on here, not the least of which is that WP isn't an indiscriminate collection of material. It seems that perhaps this would be better suited to be incorporated into either (or both) Watson Kirkconnell or János Arany. If you look at the latter, none of the poems are pages. Three were wiki-linked, but to either people, or to the bird (nightingale), so I am not convinced this poem needs its own article, but I will leave it to editors who may have literature policy knowledge that I don't. ArielGold 18:31, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm not so knowledgeable about lit stuff (music's more my thing) but I don't really see a translation of a poem being considered encyclopedic. I agree, sometimes leaving it to someone else to decide is the best policy. Note the edit history for Kirkconnell's article and see what the IP who requested the Bards of Wales article added. Precious Roy 19:00, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I did notice that. I don't think it is a ridiculous thing to request, I'm just not sure what the whole guideline on poetry is, so that's why I decided to do what I did. Hopefully someone else can decide what's best for Wikipedia. Thanks, Tortoise! ArielGold 19:06, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Young Padawan Ariel

Trust your instinct you must, young Padawan, and the Force shall guide you ;) Your version well-thought was, but copying my design without fixing the very esoteric syntax, like you did from Antandrus' page to yours, you must not, for this to the Dark Side may lead. May my new version help you in the path ahead, and that you continue to enjoy my humble work at your userpage, I hope! :) Many hugs in your way, I send! Phaedriel - 20:29, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you dear Phaedriel! And again to clear up the exact process of how I came to re-do my page: I got my new page design idea from seeing the Template:Filefolder, which I found on Trevor's page, somehow, I forget how I found that page of his... and from there, I went to the cartella image page, and then looked at what linked there, and actually used different pages of code, not copying it from any one person's. But for the most part, I followed Awadewit's page design. I'd never been to the other person you mentioned, Antandrus, until long after I re-did mine on August 14th. I don't know which came first, and I don't think it really matters, as they're both great looking pages, right? Is any page design really 100% original, when not made by our Phaedriel? I think it would be safe to say that the majority of userpages out there that are at all customized, are in some part, touched by Phae's design talent. . Thanks for fixing my mistakes. I wish I could understand this stuff, to "see" it in pictures, if you will, so I can figure out how to make it work when things go wrong. ArielGold 21:17, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Touché, dear Tim! ;) And Ariel, sweetie, please, don't mention it - how could I possibly turn down a request so flattering as yours? (tho I hardly consider myself the Obi Wan of Wiki markup - it's obvious that you have not met Dragons flight yet! ;) Thank you for the most kind (and undeserved) words to yours truly as well, now getting serious and really moved. Frankly, I don't care in the least where you got the model from, no matter if it was from either Antandrus or my friend Awadewit's pages, or any other place on Earth. In whole truth, I firmly believe that one of the most wonderful aspects of our project and our free licenses is that the beauty that we weave every day, be it in the shape of articles, portals, images or designs, can reach places and people undreamed of. And the more, the merrier. What are we here for, if not to gift others the pleasure of sharing what we create with them? And above all, who's better to share it that those we call our friends and fellow editors? But there we go, rambling on again - beware, for I'll fill your talk page with my sillyness ;) Truly, thank you for your beautiful words, and I swear I'll try to live by them. And just in case you forget to check your mail, as you sometimes do: watch for the upcoming "boink" in the next hours... promised? Love, Phaedriel - 04:36, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Absolutely, but at AfC, they aren't removed, but simply closed as non notable. Rarely are submissions entirely removed. Attacks inside them are removed, then closed, blank submissions are closed as blank, copyvio issues are removed, then closed as cv, etc. ArielGold 15:30, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Yup, as I speak, I am at The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham, West Sussex... using a weird portable edition of Firefox that someone installed sneakily on this machine only as an alternative to the uber-crap IE6. What's weird is that it calls itself something different for every window ever called up. At the moment, it is calling itself Watercrow, although I've had Powerpigeon, Firedog and many others too... Me tries signing of by simply typing ~~~~. - Voxpuppet (talkcontribs) 15:44, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Hee hee, sure didn't. Strangeeeee... no worries! ArielGold 15:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and what it displays: I believe that is a humorous add-on you can do to Firefox, to get it to display a bunch of wild, kooky names instead of "Firefox". Purely entertainment but still funny, lol. ArielGold 15:47, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Random question. . .

What do you (or anyone else that watches this page . . .I know you're out there) see the color in my the T/C of my signature as? Into The Fray T/C <-- I see it as grey at home (which is how I have it set in my prefs), but green here at work. Very odd. Two different browsers, though. Into The Fray T/C 16:32, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello m'dear Fray! I see it as grey, and you've specified it as grey in your sig code: [[Special:Contributions/Into The Fray|<font color="grey"><small>C</small></font>]]. It could be that at work, there is an override function to links, thus standardizing all link colors, regardless of what is specified. I don't know how you'd change that, though. Do you like it green? lol. That would be easier to fix. ArielGold 16:37, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Nope, links aren't overridden that I'm aware of. And, anyway, back when blue & yellow were the colors in my signature, it always looked fine at work. This will remain one of those odd little mysteries that I shall chalk up to the entropy of the universe . . . or the fact that my company is still running Windows 2000 and IE 6.0. Into The Fray T/C 16:41, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, yes it could be related to the older version of IE, although I cannot explain why other colors would show up. Very odd... But then, perhaps explainable by Quantum physics, "The act of observing, disturbs the observed". ~*Giggle*~ ArielGold 16:44, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
you know how a CRT display is made up of phosphors in 3 different colours? it's possible that the narrowness of the grey letters is only hitting the green phosphors on that particular display, thus making it show up green. — Timotab Timothy (not Tim dagnabbit!) 19:02, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Ok, just to add to the list - I see it as a light green. I have a CRT flat screen monitor, use IE6 and run Windows Pro XP if that helps. --Naha|(talk) 19:07, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Hrmmm, interesting. I'm on a widescreen LCD with Firefox 2.0.0.7 and IE 7, so I'm of no help I guess, lol. Sounds like it is either a CRT thing or an IE6 thing though. Thanks Naha and Timothy! ArielGold 19:15, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I just pulled this page up on my my husband's computer. He is using an LCD monitor and also runs Windows XP Pro. However, he has 2 browsers installed; on IE7 - the font comes up as light green, and on Firefox, it comes up as grey/black. So that makes me think its a browser thing. --Naha|(talk) 19:21, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Yep, I just checked it in IE7, and it does come up as lime green there. Interesting. It is specified as "grey" in the code, so that's a flaw with IE. ~*Gasp*~ ArielGold 19:23, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok so what if we change the code to the actual HTML color# for the grey you want? Using IE myself, these all now work for me:

Hope that helps :) --Naha|(talk) 19:32, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

We need a new section so Ariel doesn't have to scroll!

Yep, forcing color by using the hex code would work. I'll pop over to Fray's page to let him know we are talking about it still, lol. ArielGold 19:40, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

LOL! You guys are too much. Thanks for the heads up, Ariel. You're the best. I hadn't realized that this was still going on. For the record, I'm looking at two flat panel LCD's (I tried it on both), different models from the same manufacturer at the moment. I don't think it's the screen rendering because, you know, I'd notice differences elsewhere, which I don't. I'm sure it's something in the software setup of my work computer, because it is severely limited in "adaptability", as just about every function and setting has been locked down to prevent non-conformity with the network for security reasons. At home, I view it with a laptop, whatever the latest version of Firefox is, whatever the latest version of IE is and the laptop has a widescreen. It shows grey at home. I'm not sure, but I don't think I can use the hex code because it will take up too much space, but I'll try when I get home. In any event, thanks everyone for your comments! And thanks Ariel for the heads up! Into The Fray T/C 19:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC) <-- it's grey, dammit

Oh you are baaaaaaad, you ..you, button pusher you! :P And yes, I know it is staged...mostly. Its hard to "fake" flying off the top rope and doing a back flip onto another person. They try to mitigate the damage as most as posible; the main "fake" things are the punches and the submition holds (ie, just pretending they are squeezing someone's neck really tight). They take a lot of bumps and bruises though, and there are a lot of injuries. So while the outcomes of the matches are in fact predtermined, and some of the moves are fake, not everything is staged. Some of us prefer to call it "choreograped" LOL...and I love to think of it as a really exciting soap opera, because the storylines are where its all at! Soo much more fun than those daytime soap thingies, ICK! It is honestly something I never imagined myself enjoying, but after watching it once I was so incredibly hooked that now its a major hobby of mine and also the area of Wikipedia I spend the most time working on.
Then there is NASCAR ..."oh look, he took a left ..oh another left! *flips TV channels and flips back to NASCAR an hour later* ..."OMG they are still taking lefts ...I'm at the edge of my seat!" /teases you back! Heheh to each her own, right? :P But you do have to admit John Cena is nice to look at! Well, I guess *you* don't have to ..but I think he is :) --Naha|(talk) 22:20, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

LOL Not all NASCAR races are on oval tracks, y'know! Hee hee. And yeah, I look at Wrestling to sport, as reality shows are to acting, lol. Choreographed, but somewhat spontaneous at times. And I can tell you, if you were 40 feet from the Indianapolis Speedway when someone flipped their car, and rolled it 5+ times, you'd sure as heck be on the very edge of your seat, or standing up! (Not that that's something we want to see, mind you.) There is nothing "tame" about going 200+ mph, whether it is going in circles or not, hee hee. Oh I know they aren't all on oval tracks, I just like to tease ;) I will freely admit that I've never been to a car race in person (just seen them on TV) and will allow for the possibility that going to one could alter my current opinion of "mostly boring except for crashes and the last few laps" lol. Its happened before with other stuff :P The crashes are exciting and I would definitely be on the edge of my seat for those..I was going to mention crashes earlier but didn't want to sound morbid (it is indeed terrible when someone is badly injured or dies). Re John Cena: I've linked to Cena's Wiki article twice in previous posts for ya, there are several pictures of him there if you'd like, but they leave a lot to be desired when you have seen him in person! Oh, I'm an idiot....I never thought to link you to wwe.com. Extremely safe company website of a multi-million dollar business. They have a photo gallery for most of their stars. Cena's is here: http://www.wwe.com/superstars/raw/johncena/photos2/. At any rate, I still say, to each their own! ;) --Naha|(talk) 23:19, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
