Arilou (short for Arilou Lalee'lay) are a fictional race of beings featured in the Star Control science fiction computer games. They are aligned with the Alliance of Free Stars. They are the race that's called the Greys (or little green men in the past), and their ships resemble the stereotypical flying saucers.
[edit] Overview
The Arilou live outside the galaxy, out of truespace and hyperspace. This little "nook" is called QuasiSpace, and it contains their homeworld Falayalaralfali.
The Arilou are well versed in information gathering and intergalactic or interdimensional travel. They know many races and beings that the Earthlings possess no knowledge of — and were it for the Arilou to decide, this is how they would keep it: they claim that things exist, the mere knowledge of which is dangerous.
The Arilou have clearly had much interaction with Humans throughout mankind's evolution, and they hint at a "vested interest" they have in the Human race. They're keen on popping in and visiting the Earth often, apparently in order to "check up" on the young sentients, although what exactly it is that they're after remains unrevealed.
They used to have peaceful relations with the Umgah race, before the tricksters did the ultimate practical joke and joined the Ur-Quan Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. Orz are another dimension-travelling race; however, the Arilou like to stress the point that that is where their similarity ends. The Arilou suggest the Humans should not trust the Orz, for they are dangerous.
[edit] Arilou in Star Control 3
In Star Control 3, it was discovered that due to their age and partially due to their time in QuasiSpace, the Arilou DNA was very "brittle" and prone to abnormalities and defects, and human DNA could somehow be "spliced in" to alleviate this. However, like many of Star Control 3's "revelations", this is generally disregarded as non-canonical by fans of the series for numerous reasons, although it would explain alien abductions.
[edit] Ariloulaleelay Skiff
The Skiff is a small, round and extremely maneuverable vessel that is, like the Slylandro Probe, unaffected by inertia or gravity. Its main weapon is an extremely short-ranged auto-targeting laser, which allows the Skiff to score shots at an unshielded foe simply by way of proximity.
The Skiff is an effective mopping-up unit. The autotargeting laser is effective at eliminating Ur-Quan fighters and Orz boarders. Parking in a gravity well behind a planet is an effective tactic. The VUX Intruder is a moderately effective weapon against the Skiff, especially if it can move close to a planet to gain gravitational velocity while littering the field with limpets. The Ariloulaleelay Skiff is often involved in epic battles against the Umgah Drone, which can kill it instantly, but which has trouble targeting it. Likewise, the Skiff can be highly effective against the Mycon Podship, using its amazing speed and maneuverability to guide the Podship's deadly homing plasmoids back onto itself.
The secondary ability of the Skiff is a teleportation device, which will instantaneously move the ship into a random spot on the battlefield. The teleport can be used both to escape from an enemy, and to attempt a surprise attack against enemies that might otherwise be hard to approach safely, like a Chenjesu Broodhome. However, it should be noted that every teleportation carries a small chance of materializing inside a planet or an asteroid, resulting in death. (This feature was not present in the first Star Control.)
