The village of Arichat is one of the oldest communities in Nova Scotia, dating back to the 1700s, when tall ships ruled the seas. It is the county seat of Richmond County. Arichat was first settled in the early 1700s. In 1713, a permanent settlement now known as Arichat was established beginning the rapid economic rise of Isle Madame. In 1774, the population of the Arichat totaled 237 people. Arichat Harbour was becoming an international trading port by 1801. Ships coming from Sydney, Nova Scotia would come past St. Peter's Bay and the Grandique Ferry harbour. Ships coming from Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, enter Isle Madame by the Chedabucto Bay.
Visitors to Arichat observe vistas of rocky coastline, inlets, coves and islands of Arichat harbour along the very edge of the shore.
