[edit] Etymology
The English name is derived from the Italian form of the Greek name Ariadne, which means "most holy" (Cretan Greek αρι [ari] "most" and αδνος [adnos] "holy")[1] and a Welsh name meaning silver (Welsh arian, "silvery"). [2]. In Persian languages the name Ariana takes its root meaning from the word Aryan and means "light of the Aryans" or "of Aryan stock".[citation needed] The name was typically given to girls born among the Indo-European peoples of the Persian Empire (Iran), including Afghanistan.[citation needed]
