[edit] UT article

Hi, thanks for your help with 2006 Texas Longhorn football team. I also see you like some of my favorite TV shows. Unfortunately, I do need to warn you about having copyrighted screenshots on your user page. Wikipedia does not allow non-free images outside of articles. They can never be used in Templates, on Talk pages, or on User pages. Please remove them. Otherwise, someone is bound to come along soon and remove them. I believe the best place to read about this policy is probably Wikipedia:Fair use. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Best, Johntex\talk 14:58, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Personally, I'd like to see us have a little more forgiving policy with respect to fair-use images, but the rules are the rules until/unless we manage to change them. Thanks for being so nice about it. Best, Johntex\talk 23:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
I consider it unresolved still. There is a mediation cabal case that is still open at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-08-01 Fair Use Images on Sports Page - College Football Specific. There is also an RfC I filled on User:Kelly Martin at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Kelly Martin2. Neither of those have been active very recently.
However, in the meantime, users have pushed through some subtle changes in phrasing to our policies. You may be surprised to learn that some people think we are primarily an action in the "free content" movement, and only secondarily an encyclopedia. In their view, it is better to have no image at all than to use a fair use image. Their thinking seems to be that if we refuse to use (for example) a fair use publicity shot to illustrate an article, eventually that celebrity will give us a free-use picture and that will be a great stride for this free-use movement. Ed seems to be of this mentallity, and he seems to spend a tremendous amount of his time pushing this viewpoint.
Even if that mindset prevails (and I hope it does not), logos are still a special case because by definition no free alternative will ever be available. Realistically, no amount of pleading will get IBM or University of Texas to put their logos out under GFDL. I probably need to bring the issue back to Wikipedia talk:Logos. [edit] Signature problem

FYI, your sig is causing some odd linebreak problems... I thought I'd like you know so that you could take a look at it.  :) --Elonka 00:19, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I think it may have been related to an extra linefeed that was on your "Status" page. I removed it, so now any page with your sig that gets re-saved, should automatically fix itself. --Elonka 00:28, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

About your signature, you're using a template in it and that's pretty much discouraged, see WP:SIG#Transclusion/template. There are very good reasons as to why we don't include templates in signatures, and it's not a good idea to bypass this and include them anyways. Just thought I'd let you know. -- Ned Scott 06:46, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Consensus gathering at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (television)

Hello. Thank you for offering your opinion and "vote" to Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (television)#Episode Article Naming conventions!

We notice that there may have been confusing in collecting the opinions of yourselves and others. Thus, we would appreciate it if you took the time to voting again at the poll. Please choose "#Support" or "#Oppose" for the first option. Additionally, you may also make a completely separate vote for which disambiguation title with be used.

For example, you may vote to oppose the first policy and then support the convention that articles have the disambiguation suffix "(<series> episode)" appended to their name. We apologize for the inconvience and complexity. Ace Class Shadow; My talk. 21:56, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Argash, hi, I wanted to clarify something. I've been trying to make a "Summary of discussion" section at the Naming conventions page, and I wanted to doublecheck that I had your opinion listed properly. I'd originally listed it as "Suffix adds needed context to the article", but then someone said that you'd also agreed with Cburnett's suggestion of "disambiguate only when needed as long as redirects are created". Can you please clarify which of these that you feel is your primary position? Or would you be most comfortable if both were listed? Feel free to change your listing at Wikipedia_talk:Naming conventions (television)#Summary of discussion to ensure that it's an accurate representation of your view? Thanks.  :) --Elonka 03:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

A request for mediation has been filed with the Mediation Committee that lists you as a party. The Mediation Committee requires that all parties listed in a mediation must be notified of the mediation. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television), and indicate whether you agree or refuse to mediate. If you are unfamiliar with mediation, please refer to Wikipedia:Mediation. There are only seven days for everyone to agree, so please check as soon as possible.Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 04:45, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Courtesy note about ArbCom proceeding

Hiya, sorry to bother you, but I wanted to drop you a courtesy note to let you know about a current ArbCom proceeding where your name is briefly mentioned. If you are not familiar with ArbCom, please do not be alarmed. In real-world terms, this is sort of like stating that your name is being mentioned as one of the witnesses (or possibly even bystanders) to a case. ArbCom cases tend to be somewhat large and chaotic, but if you would like to watch the proceedings, you may wish to set Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Naming Conventions on your watchlist. Your own name is probably somewhere on the evidence page, or possibly at the workshop page. The case is currently in an "evidence-gathering" phase and has not yet reached the state of actual comment by arbitrators yet. My guess is it'll probably run for another month or so before a decision is finalized.

No action is needed on your part, this is just a courtesy note. If you would like to participate in the case though, you are more than welcome. You may wish to offer a statement with your view of events at the case's talkpage, or you can add evidence or participate in the workshop. Many editors routinely participate in ArbCom proceedings regardless of whether or not they are directly involved in the case, since ArbCom rulings are considered "binding" and may have ramifications in other parts of Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, let me know, or feel free to post at Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Naming Conventions. Best, Elonka 05:33, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Mafiaalogo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Mafiaalogo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] color in episode infoboxes

Hi Argash, you contributed actively to a discussion of the use of colors in Infoboxes for television episodes. In a drive towards limiting the amount of spin-offs of Template:Infobox Television episode, this issue has again come up, and I was wondering if you would care to comment on my ideas to come to a "best effort solution". Thank you for your time. TheDJ (talkcontribsWikiProject Television) 04:27, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Life (US TV series)

I have reverted your redirect to Life (TV Series). I assume the reason you used an incorrect dab ("TV Series" instead of "TV series") is that Life (TV series) is currently a dab page. Since there are two other television series with the same name (even though they don't currently have WP articles), "US TV series" is the proper dab. Also, when you cut + paste to move a page, you lose the article's entire edit history. Precious Roy 07:05, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
