[edit] Awesome job on going to SF

It's nice to see another P2P app go open source. Not a "Pro" version in sight either!

[edit] Huge load of BS

This looks like Ares homepage

I can't find any evidence of any packaged spyware. It's open source. Can anyone prove me wrong here? There are plenty of ripoffs, but I don't see any spyware/adware. --69.142.38.54 05:02, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

The software is open source. I looked through it's source code and there is no suspicious code there. Other programmers can take a look. Any software not registered in a firewalls database will be blocked. Most file-sharing programs can download malicious software if the user does not take the necessary precautions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.248.162.21 (talk) 18:01, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Popularity

Seems like Ares is catching up to eMule as the most downloaded project on sourceforge, though if you count the multitude of eMule spinoffs (both the mods at sourceforge and distros like VeryCD), I'm sure eDonkey still has a much larger user base. Still, for a program that is apparently very popular, I haven't really seen or heard much about it. Can somebody discuss more about the origins of the program? Was it very popular in its days of being a Gnutella client? VanishingUser 07:35, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

The reason you haven't heard a lot about it is that it is by far the most popular in Latin America. eMule has a lot of users in Europe and Asia as well as anglophone America, while Ares is very big in Spanish-speaking countries. That's not to say it's not used by English-speaking people, it just has a much larger part of the market share in Spanish-speaking places (in North America, people are divided between LimeWire, BitTorrent, Gnutella, Ares, eMule...)

[edit] Why is it detected as spyware?

Windows Defender and many other antivirus-antispyware applications now detect Ares as a threat. Is the new version bundled with third party applications or malware? --189.135.66.152 18:00, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The detection as "spyware"

Ares is considered spyware because it is a peer-to-peer file sharing program. That means those files come from someone elses computer. No those files can have spyware malware and even viruses if people have infected them with it. I remember my friend having Ares and his Norton Anti-Virus blocked it more than 100 times in 1 minute. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hellraise21 (talk • contribs) 02:35, 6 February 2007 (UTC). ||SpyCatcher identifies "Final Ares Complete Edition" as a password hacker. I don't know if this is related to AresGalaxy. A few of the associated files have similar names. Dwhita1

[edit] ares gold

What is regarded faster? cpu speed/ download speed/ upload speed? needs reference instead of promotion of the creator. :Leuk he 15:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Alternative clients inconsistency

I'm a KCesy user, DLing with the Ares Plugin therein. In the article it states that KCesy & FilePipe have no problems connecting to Ares net but giFT does. Surely an oxymoron (as KCesy is a giFT front-end)?..._> MonstaPro:Talk:Contrib. 14:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Ares Galaxy 2.0.9 Screenshot.JPG

Image:Ares Galaxy 2.0.9 Screenshot.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Neutrality?

"Ares Galaxy is an open source peer-to-peer file sharing program for Microsoft Windows. It is written in Delphi. Proponents for the software claim that it is able to download quickly, has a better and more complete search function than other file-sharing programs, and connects quickly." Hmmm, doesn't seem very neutral to me at the end. You can't actually base those facts without testing everty P2P program available and even then, it's still biased towards Ares.
