Arenal Volcano erupting at night, March 14, 2003. Though the volcano is active, watching eruptions at Arenal is much like watching a meteor shower: most of the time nothing happens, but the patient observers are sure to be rewarded with a fine display. The fire is too faint to be seen from any distance during the day, though smoke can be seen rising from the mountainside.
