Arend Dickmann

Arend Dickmann (1572-1627) - Admiral in the Polish Navy. He was a Dutchman, born in Delft under the name Arend Dijckman. From 1608 he lived in Danzig (Gdansk), being an owner of a merchant ship. In 1626 he entered in the service of the Polish king Sigismund III Vasa. On 24 November 1627 he was nominated as admiral of the Polish Navy.
During the victorious Battle of Oliwa against the Swedish fleet (28 November 1627) he commanded the Polish Navy in the galleon Sankt Georg. The Poles captured the Swedish galleon Tigern and made another, Solen, to be scuttled by her crew, but Admiral Dickmann was killed onboard the Tigern, being shot by a cannonball through his legs. He received a state burial in Gdansk.
