Area code 732

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 732 was created on June 1, 1997, as the result of a split in New Jersey area code 908[1], and became mandatory on December 6th of that year. The area code mostly covers the Jersey Shore region of New Jersey, with a small area of North/Central Jersey covered along with some coverage in South Jersey, particularly in Ocean County. Area code 848 is an overlay code for this region that was created as the pool of 732 numbers began to diminish drastically.

The following is a sampling of the towns covered by the area code.

North/Central Jersey (Somerset and Middlesex Counties): Green Brook, Dunellen, Middlesex, Edison, Metuchen, New Brunswick, Woodbridge, Perth Amboy, Carteret, South Brunswick.

The North/Central Jersey area covered by 732 mainly comprises residential communities of varying levels of wealth. The hilly areas in Somerset County are mainly fairly wealth suburban communities that serve as both a bedroom community for New York City and as a quality place to live for residents working in strong local industries such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications. The areas around Middlesex County are mainly middle class communities whose residents either commute to New York or work in pharmaceuticals and telecommunications. Rutgers University is also located in the Middlesex portion of North/Central Jersey covered by 732. The Middlesex areas are also known for their diversity. Edison, for example, has one of the highest Asian populations in the United States outside of the West Coast.

Jersey Shore (Monmouth and Middlesex Counties): Middletown, Red Bank, Holmdel, Freehold, Hazlet, Tinton Falls, Long Branch, Eatontown, Rumson, Fair Haven, Matawan, Asbury Park, Manalapan, Marlboro, Belmar, Manasquan, Spring Lake, Old Bridge, Sayreville, Monroe, South Amboy.

The Jersey Shore area covered by 732 is mainly residential communities of varying levels of wealth. Monmouth County generally does not have the strong local industries, but rather serves almost exclusively as a bedroom community for New York City. The northern portions of the county are fairly close to New York City, with many nice communities. The southern portions of the county however, especially areas south of Asbury Park, are fairly far from New York and not really close to Philadelphia either. Their economic wealth is buoyed, however, by the existence of nice beaches that serve as a common tourist destination for residents in the New York area. These beaches are strategically located since they are close to the New York area. Except for Holmdel, which has a high Asian population, the Monmouth and southern Middlesex section of 732 is fairly homogeneous, with most areas being predominately White. Spring Lake has a high Irish population. The area is also known for producing New Jersey legends Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Not surprisingly, residents in the area are fans of both music artists.

South Jersey (Ocean County): Toms River, Jackson, Lakewood, Brick

The South Jersey area covered by 732 is mainly working class shore communities. These areas are mainly defined by the tourist industry, with various beach resorts and theme parks. Jackson, for example, is home to Six Flags Great Adventure, a popular theme park frequented by New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware residents. These areas generally do not serve as a bedroom community for either New York or Philadelphia. Unlike Mercer County, which is a bedroom community for both New York and Philadelphia, Ocean County is a working class county, so residents who work in either city would generally not commute far into these areas. Except for Lakewood, which has a high Jewish population, the Ocean section of 732 is very homogeneous, with most areas being overwhelmingly White.
