Area code 514/438
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 514 is an area code that covers all of the Island of Montreal, Ile-Perrot, and Ile Bizard in the Canadian province of Quebec. Area code 514 was established in 1947 to cover the western half of the province, but in 1957, it was reduced to the region surrounding Montreal; the final boundary change occurred in 1997 when Area code 450 was split off. It overlays with the new area code 438 beginning on November 4, 2006, as part of the change to mandatory ten-digit dialing, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA).
It is to be noted that mandating 10-digit dialing is illogical to many as long as you want to call the same area code. Hence, most VoIP providers in Montreal continue to allow 7-digit dialing, and even the last 4 digits if the 3 first are the same, for some of them.
