Talk:ARD (broadcaster)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The present title -- ARD (TV) -- is inappropriate since ARD is both a radio and a television public-service broadcaster (or, rather, community of radio and television broadcasters). There already exists an exiguous article (at present really no more than a definition), Das Erste, concerned with ARD's national television channel. A list of German language television channels also exists, but among ARD members only MDR and WDR appear to have articles at present. Ample scope for a sort-out! -- Picapica 15:34, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I moved the article to Alliance of the Public Broadcasters of Germany, I hope this name is appropriate now. --Derbeobachter 02:30, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
-
- Sorry, I appreciate the effort, Derbeobachter, but I don't think that "Alliance of the Public Broadcasters of Germany" really cuts the mustard. It is a made-up name which exists only in the Wikipedia and its derivatives. "Alliance" is much too weak a translation of "Arbeitsgemeinschaft": it suggests a lobby group rather than the literal meaning of a working community. I would suggest "consortium" is much closer. But, in any case, I don't think that the title of the article should be any kind of translation of ARD (translation of the meaning is a job for the body of the article). Anyone looking for information on the ARD is not going to be looking for it under Alliance or Consortium, but under ...ARD! I propose renaming the article to ARD (broadcasting). -- Picapica 23:52, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- You could always move it back to ARD (TV), then don't forget to fix the redirects. --JohnDBuell 01:52, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- I could, but see my original objection above; ARD is a radio and television broadcaster, and the article is about its role in both media. I'll leave my proposal on the table for comment for a little longer, with one amendment: I now think that ARD (broadcaster), rather than (broadcasting), would be preferable. (Naturally I would fix all redirects, etc.). -- Picapica 10:37, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware that the ARD did its own radio programming. I thought all of the regions did their own, with the ARD being more of a 'guiding hand'. --JohnDBuell 12:45, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I think it is rather more than a guiding hand (see [1]); amongst other activities it organizes and co-ordinates such national programming streams as ARD-Popnacht, ARD-Nachtprogramm, ARD-Nachtkonzert, contributed to by the various regional Rundfunkanstalten in much the same way as they supply the schedule of Das Erste. Furthermore, non-regional Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur are provided jointly by ARD and ZDF, and the national external broadcaster Deutsche Welle is an ARD member. I think it would therefore be misleading to describe ARD as (only) a "television broadcaster". If it can't be called a radio broadcaster because it does not produce its own broadcast material, then by the same token it can't be called a TV broadcaster either. I would say that this article is about the broadcasting organization ARD, and not directly about the television channel formerly known as "ARD", Das Erste (which has its own article in any case). -- Picapica 14:12, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Guess I never listened to more than WDR3 and Deutsche Welle on the other side of the Atlantic. Anyway, why not give it a couple of days for further comment, and if there aren't any objections (and I doubt there will be), do the move and then fix the redirects. --JohnDBuell 20:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

- MDR was a stub, WDR was the only working article until I got SWR translated. MDR is also now translated, and I'm working on BR. That will leave five more of the regional broadcasters. --JohnDBuell | Talk 23:59, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hier is das Erste
"Hier ist das Erste Deutsche Fernsehen mit der Tagesschau" Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember this to be "Hier ist das Deutsche Fernsehen..." until maybe the Mid-80's? Anyone know the correct date? ~ trialsanderrors 09:01, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- It was still "Hier ist das Deutsche Fernsehen..." in December 1976. (See this YouTube video.) The name Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen was not adopted until 1984. -- Picapica 20:10, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
