[edit] Overview
The film is an exploration of the psyche of a honest police officer, who finds himself amidst a corrupt police force, unable to fight or protect his viewpoint that he had entered the police force with, a fact ably expressed in the poem, read towards the end of the film, from the book of his girlfriend, who he suddenly finds to more courageous.
Ardh Satya provided for the first time, an insight into the growing police-politician-criminal nexus in the 70s and the 80s [4]. Govind Nihalani took his explorations of a cop's psyche, further in his 1994 film, Drohkaal, and then again in his 2004 cop-drama, Dev, where once again an idealist officer (Amitabh Bachchan) find himself trapped in a corrupt police force, which is also getting rapid communalized. He unable to fight the system and is finally killed by the system itself [5].
Theme Poem
Excerpts from the famous Hindi poem by Dilip Chitre, spoken by Om Puri towards end the film, summarising the entire theme of the film, of feeling impotent, when one finds oneself part of the system, which one once revolted against.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne se pehle,
kaun tha mein aur kaisa tha,
yeh mujhe yaad hi na rahega.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne ke baad,
mere aur chakravyuh ke beech,
sirf ek jaanleva nikat’ta thi,
iska mujhe pata hi na chalega.
Chakravyuh se nikalne ke baad,
main mukt ho jaoon bhale hi,
phir bhi chakravyuh ki rachna mein
farq hi na padega.
Marun ya maarun,
maara jaoon ya jaan se maardun.
iska faisla kabhi na ho paayega.
Soya hua aadmi jab
neend se uthkar chalna shuru karta hai,
tab sapnon ka sansar use,
dobara dikh hi na paayega.
Us roshni mein jo nirnay ki roshni hai
sab kuchh s’maan hoga kya?
Ek palde mein napunsakta,
ek palde mein paurush,
aur theek taraazu ke kaante par
ardh satya.
Before entering the circle of enemies
who was I and how I was
I didn't remember it
After entering it there was only dangerous nearness
between me and the circle
I didn't realize that
After getting out of the circle
even if I am free
Even then the structure of the circle
will remain unaltered
whether I die or kill
This will never be decided
when a man starts walking after waking from sleep
He can never see the world of dreams again
In the light, the light of decision
will everything be equal
on one hand is cowardice and other courage
and at the center is a half truth
