Arctic Bronze
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arctic Bronze Turkey is a breed of domesticated turkey (Meleagris gallopavo arcticus) which has been bred specifically for the colder climates of Alaska and Canada. Thought to derive from a cross between the eastern species of North American wild turkey and domestic turkeys from Europe.
[edit] History
The original breeding program beganin early 2000, and the species is known for its thicker feathers and longer brooding period, perfect for the chilly Spring nights in the Arctic. The species has a lighter color, and generally reaches mature adulthood within 3 months. An Arctic Bronze Tom brooded in early Mary can easily attain 45-50lbs by early September.
Most small-scale turkey farms around Fairbanks and Dawson City keep a small group of birds together with a padded coop (usually 5-6 birds per 12' enclosure). A heat source for game birds must be used over winter. The Alaska Agricultural Research Station reccomends using starter diet for an extra week during the brooding stage.
