Arco da Calheta

Arco da Calheta is a parish in the district of Calheta in the Madeira Islands. The population in 2001 is 3,241, its density is 129.6/km² and the area is 23 km². Arco da Calheta is the largest parish in Calheta in both population and area. It is one of the few parishes in which is larger than the seat of the parish. Ponta do Sol is bordered to the east as well as Porto Moniz to the north. The parish covers most of the eastern portion of Calheta. It is located near Calheta. The main industry are agriculture and some businesses. It is connected with a road linking Calheta, Porto Moniz and Funchal. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south and southwest. The mountains and its laurisilva forests are to the north. A power plant is situated in a middle of a valley to the north supplying electricity to the western part of the island and the rest of Madeira.
