Archdiocese of Taipei

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Taipei (Latin: Archidioecesis Taipehensis) is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Taiwan. Pope Pius XII erected it as the Apostolic Prefecture of Taipei on December 30, 1949, and elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archdiocese on August 7, 1952, with the suffragan sees of Chiayi, Hsinchu, Hwalien, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan.

The archdiocese's motherchurch and thus seat of its archbishop is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As the only metropolitan in Taiwan, it is also the primatial see of that country. The current Archbishop of Taipei is His Excellency John Hung Shan-Chuan, having been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on November 9, 2007.
