The Diocese of San Fernando was established on December 11, 1948, as a Suffragan See of the Archdiocese of Manila. It became an archdiocese on March 17, 1975. The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando was originally an Augustinian convent church, built 1788-1808.

Among the educational institutions dependent on the Archdiocese is the University of the Assumption (founded 1963; accredited as a university 1980), which houses the Archdiocesan Museum and Archives, with artifacts and documents which in some cases date back to the 17th century.
