Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro

The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro (Archidiocesis Sancti Sebastiani Fluminis Ianuarii) in Brazil was established as a territorial prelature on July 19, 1575. It was elevated to the status of a diocese on November 16, 1676. It was later elevated to a metropolitan see on April 27, 1892. On May 6, 2003, the territorial abbey of Nossa Senhora do Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro was suppressed and added to the archdiocese. The current Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro is His Eminence Eusébio Cardinal Scheid since 2001. Eugênio Cardinal de Araújo Sales holds the position of Archbishop Emeritus.
