Archdiocese of São Paulo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Archdiocese of São Paulo is a major see in the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil. The Diocese of São Paulo was erected by Pope Benedict XIV on 6 December 1745. It became an Archdiocese on 7 June 1908. The Archbishop Emeritus of São Paulo is His Eminence Paulo Evaristo Cardinal Arns since 15 April 1998. The Archdiocese of São Paulo is currently headed by Odilo Scherer since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 21 March 2007. The Archbishop replaced Claudio Cardinal Hummes since his appointment as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy on 31 October 2006. Interestingly, Archbishop Scherer's appointment ends almost four decades of Franciscan leadership in the Archdiocese with both Cardinal Arns and Cardinal Hummes both belonging to that Order.
